Andover got hit by a tornado tonight again.

I was 5 minutes behind Reed Timmer getting gasoline. Lol.

Now I’m in a dust storm warning. Rare for central Kansas. Shows how dry it’s been.

Dust storm warning? Screw that. That sounds terrible and really gross lol

I had them frequently when I lived in west Texas. Got a sinus infection every time. I didn’t bring my decongestant since it’s normally wet here in spring. I can’t recall a dust storm warning growing up in KS.

The damage is pretty bad in Andover just a few days shy of 31 years after the last major tornado there.

That was quite a tornado in Andover :double: and the similarities to the 1991 tornado are striking(hopefully not on deaths...). Hard to get a clear picture at night but I'm expecting at least ef3

But anyway cap held here for the main event and it was just sunny and windy. Now a line approaching which had a tornado warning earlier but it's definitely a lot less severe now

Very sad news, heart out to their friends, family, and OU for the loss. Were they involved in chasing activities due to the weather?

Yeah from what I've seen they were hit by a semi on the way back from the chase

Yeah said they hydroplaned and then got hit on the side of the road or something

Apparently were trapped for hours before rescue found them. Just insane

Absolutely incredible and such detail. Shows doesn't take much to rip off a house, size isn't everything. The vortices and updrafts...just wow.

Enhanced Risk of Severe Storms are in place for Western Texas today

Tomorrow already looks dangerous for Oklahoma and Kansas, already a 10% Hatched area for Tornadoes.

5/4 looks really big, Enhanced risk for Oklahoma.

For North Texas there are two camps in terms of rainfall tonight. The skies open up in West Texas and complex moves northeastward.

Camp two we are split dry with a complex in southern Oklahoma and Central Texas, good for both locations.

Final numbers are in. Rainfall totals for April. Moral of the story here is that 2/3 meteorological wet season has underperformed, after hopes to recovery. Nearly all sites listed recorded deficits for the month which only adds to the long term deficits. Locally some areas did see improvement but not large enough scale. Secondly the rainfalls were too infrequent, for the one day of rain there were easily stretches of a week of very dry fire conditions, coupled with a windy month.

DFW: 2.54"
Normal: 3.22"

OKC: 1.59"
Normal: 3.60"

KAUS (Austin official): 2.20"
Normal: 2.39"

San Antonio: 1.24"
Normal: 2.54"

Houston IAH: 1.99"
Normal: 3.95"

Monthly SOI finished with +20.01, very high for April probably top tier for the month. It is the most positive monthly SOI in over a decade (December 2011.) Monthly SOI has risen every month in 2022 indicative of a regrowing Nina.

Looking forward May is generally a very wet month in the southern plains. The plan is the same, we need to get more rain on a large scale than what is normal to cut into the deficits before the dry months hit in summer, the faucet usually shuts off by mid June. Frequency of rain is just as important as how much.

Seeing the data out of Lake Mead and Powell should remind us that our water sources are limited, and in a drought year we should all plan for water use reduction, it helps us long term should it transition to a hydrological drought. That hasn't happened yet but with fast population growth and very slow to get new water sources coming online, a prolonged drought of a few years is probably likely. The PDO isn't in the mode to flip, it would take a few El Ninos to do so just as it took a couple of Ninas to flip it from +.

Watches up for most of West Texas. It looks like the CAMs are really struggling with convective evolution and thus are struggling with downstream precp placement. Cross your fingers and hope you get lucky lol

I’m out at our property near Albany Texas staying in our travel trailer. Probably going to head in to town later for better shelter if it starts to ramp up. Not spending the night in it with rough weather.
