You guys have a different idea of what a "good winter" is compared to my idea. Since I live waaaaaay north here in the thumb of Michigan, I consider a good winter to be one that has snow covering the ground with below freezing temps for the entire winter. This is different than folks on the east coast or king in southern Ohio where you expect thaws quite often during the winter. A big storm can make a good winter for you. Dec.2000 was the perfect month here. Around 100 inches of snow fell in that one month!! We had 44 inches on the ground at the start of the 2001 year. It's too bad winter only lasted a month. :( The rest of the winter was mild with very little snow. However, with 44 inches on the ground to start Jan, we had snowcover the rest of the winter. This was even with 2 big rain events and temps around 50 in Feb. By then the snow was basically solid ice, so it took a lot to melt that stuff.
