Re: ATL: FIONA - Hurricane - Discussion
Every time I look at Fiona I'm like 'surely now it must look ugly after being over land for so long'. But no, the eye is still there. I'm afraid Fiona's current track means the damage in DR will also be a lot more than most people expected.

Another noticeable jog to the west within the past few hours:

Recon is already in the Mona Passage. It’s going to be another few hours before it has the opportunity to get a center fix.

Looks like sliding along that low coastal range but there is a 10,000 foot peak ahead on that course.

After going further west than expected, it looks like Fiona has taken a significant jump north during the 30 minutes. Should be above water again within ~1 hour if the motion continues. The bottom image shows the linearly extrapolated position of Fiona based on the last 30 minutes with a white line.

The following is a dropsonde from just off the north shore of DR... winds are instantaneous, but still suggests that Fiona is holding together well over land, as seems to be the case per satellite and radar.
That said, the last part of Fiona's trek inland will probably be the most disruptive, as it has to cross some modest terrain.

Amazing how Fiona has held together over DR, I know it’s the low land, but goes to show good upper conditions can overcome land and sometimes SST.
Fiona a good reminder not to underestimate the destruction from a TS or Cat 1.

Fiona is 850 miles SE of Miami, but it's not going to Florida, guaranteed. Fiona has demonstrated that the term "minimal hurricane" should never be used.

Re: ATL: FIONA - Hurricane - Discussion
Reminds me a little bit of Michael and Ida (fortunately for DR nowhere near the peak intensity of those) in how the structure held together surprisingly well for several hours over land. Certainly wasn't expecting that when it comes to Hispaniola, the famous "shredder."

Josh’s last tweet was at 3:06am, just under half an hour before landfall, where he recorded a pressure of 979.9mb. The NHC’s landfall estimate of 977mb was probably spot-on or maybe a little high, given how impressive Fiona’s satellite presentation was. I hope Josh made it through alright.

Prayers for PR, the flooding there is insane.
I always get amazed as how a small island like Bermuda gets threat from tropical systems all the time. Hope people in Bermuda are getting ready for Fiona, they have a good 72 hours to get ready for a possible direct hit or really close hit.

And Maria in Puerto Rico. And Michael in Panama City Beach. And Patricia in Mexico.
Every big bad hurricane, especially in the Atlantic, is intercepted by him. He's legendary. Hurricanes don't haunt him, he haunts them.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.
