PR definitely taking the brunt of this fierce Cat 1 that could. The slowish movement and never ending heavy rainfall is worse for them than a direct hit would have been.

Re: ATL: FIONA - Hurricane - Discussion
Looks like Fiona's core is now almost fully back over water, which means it spent nearly 7 hours above DR while not weakening that much based on recon. After this it will likely clip Samaná and after that it'll be away from land for a while at least.

Fiona will quickly strengthen now that it's moving back over water. Will likely be our first "Major Hurricane" of the season. Intense hurricane may be more appropriate terminology. Could produce hurricane winds into Bermuda Thursday night, but their homes/businesses are built for such storms. BIG ET storm for Newfoundland this weekend. I haven't seen anything about rainfall amounts in PR. I don't imagine we'll get much out of PR news-wise for a while. Power grid across much of the island is likely down for months.

Looks to me like it’s taken the NNW turn and now it’s all systems go

Re: ATL: FIONA - Hurricane - Discussion
Latest recon pass couldn't find a clear center (min. pressure 996.2 mb with 70 kt FL winds), maybe it was still too close to land for them to find it. But they did find 75 FL winds and 68 kt SFMR, which combined with the large undersampling due to Fiona being partially above land should be more than enough to justify at least 70 kt. When I realized how long Fiona would spend over land I honestly didn't expect her to still be a cat 1 afterwards.

This is from a different forum, but the eyewall is around 215 miles away and is still being able to be picked up by the NWS-San Juan Radar.

The Radar Beam is apparently 33K feet high at that location.

Wow, that's really impressive. Goes to show how good Fiona's structure must've been just before landfall. I'm curious if we will get any direct land observations in terms of pressure and wind. Considering how well Fiona held up I can't help but think that it was stronger (maybe a minimal cat 2) just before landfall.

Rain amounts were in the mid 20s inches in center of the island in the Cayey area around 5-6am this morning and still more to come. Currently 93% of the Island without power. Could take days or weeks to restore everything.
People from Ponce to Cabo Rojo (south to south west of PR) are saying that it felt worse than Maria.

An Air Force
Reserve Unit reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate
the hurricane tonight, assuming that the cyclone will have moved
far enough offshore over the waters of the southwestern Atlantic.
It’s gonna be a while before recon returns to Fiona. It should be well off the coast by then and starting to recover from its relatively minimal land disruption by the time they arrive.
Will they continue 6-hour flight intervals as long as the Turks and Caicos are under TS/Hurricane warnings?

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Re: ATL: FIONA - Hurricane - Discussion
I just looked up some footage from Fiona on Twitter and the flooding looks absolutely horrible and in terms of water damage indeed more similar to Maria than what you'd usually expect of a cat 1. Prayers to everyone in the region. Based on some weather reports (being shared by meteorologist on social media but I can't find the original source), Ponce has received over 26 inches of rain as of early this morning, which would make Fiona the 6th wettest TC in Puerto Rico's history and the wettest one since Maria.

Re: ATL: FIONA - Hurricane - Discussion
I’m impressed at how well Fiona has remained intact over land. It certainly didn’t take worst path, but other storms have collapsed over similar or less interaction. Obviously the primed atmosphere and enhanced ventilation to the NE played a big part in this, but I bet it also has to do with that main inflow channel from the south staying offshore through the duration.

Does anyone know how Cycloneye has faired? All of PR still out of power I understand. Also looks like the eastern bands have been relentless on the eastern part of the island.
