ATL: IAN - Local reports, evacuation help/news, webcams
My son & hiss family live near the Tampa coast. They are evacuating to Melbourne. I was looking at the Melbourne Local NWS forecast: it says they are under a Tropical Storm warming & a Hurricane watch! I find that very surprising!
I am a long term member, but really have no clue.
Can someone please explain why Melbourne would be under such conditions?
Should my son consider elsewhere?
I would appreciate any help or insight.
Thanks!

Re: Tampa vs Melbourne Ian evac
That really depends upon their reason for evacuating. If they're evacuating from a surge zone in Tampa to save their lives, Melbourne is a good place to go. If they're evacuating to avoid a week or more of general post-storm calamity and power outages, Melbourne is not the place to go.

When Irma moved up the west coast of Florida the east coast experienced tropical storm force winds and gusts plus some storm surge.

We're not in a hurricane watch here in Melbourne... yet
It's not a bad place to evac to, but not the best place either. I fully expect to get some impact, including power outages, flooding, etc.
If I had to pick between Tampa and here right now though, I guess I would pick here.
EDIT: With Irma, we lost power for a week.

As someone new to the Melbourne area fully expecting to see some impacts while experiencing the family's first tropical storm.
Was that the entire Melbourne area that lost power for a week with Irma or just specific areas?

If you go to Melbourne, stay in the Viera section if you can. It's newer and has mostly underground utilities, so power outages are less of a problem. In some Cat 1-2 storms, we didn't lose power at all. In Michael, we lost power from 1:00 AM to 7:00 AM only so it wasn't a big deal.

Heard from someone I know down in Cape Coral that they were forced to evacuate this morning. The police came knocking, things are getting ugly down there. Looks like tough to get gas too, east to miamu/broward is the best bet to evacuate from down there.

It was fairly widespread. Some areas were online quicker. I work for one of the large contractors in the area and we were without power for a few days at work too.
I can't think of anyone I know that didn't lose power for some amount of time.
