Why do I have a bad feeling that Ian is peeking right now, and recon will only get there after it starts declining.

Does it matter? Let's hope the storm weakens right now before recon gets there.

I sadly don't think that is the case, a huge burst of convection with a HUGE increase of Lightning in the Western Eyewall.

The SW eyewall being stronger reminds me of Ike and how the upper dynamics enhanced that side.

This looks almost like a Left Handed Hurricane (except for rotation. Like the strong and weak quadrants were flipped on a vertical axis.

Right now I would be in a parking lot garage in Ft Meyers. My truck was my survival. In it was everything I needed to survive two weeks if I couldn’t get out after a storm.

I would be one of those dummies walking around as the eyewall approaches. However I also know there is a very safe place for the truck so there are no worries. You know when it’s time to hightail it to the garage.

You know there is a monster just 10 hours away. Every moment you feel and see the changes. You still can drive away and not endure the misery of the aftermath but you are committed to a Cat 5 hurricane.

There are going to be many people who think that watching a video of a Cat 5 gives them understanding of the power. It absolutely does not. There is going to be a moment as the water rises and the Fists of God come raining down when they will realize they made a critical error.

I loved going into these. I don’t take pictures or video because of what I said… you have to be there to feel it. I wasn’t there for the clicks. We may lose some hurricane chasers in Ian because it’s downright foolish to chase a Cat 5 without several smaller storms under your belt.

This is a major disaster unfolding. Please keep the info rolling in.

Just saw 196mph winds at 9000 feet. Combined with the eye clearing out on radar, the burst of convection on the western side, I'm concerned we will not see any weakening until after landfall.

I really hope everyone took the warnings very seriously, as this is a very serious hurricane.

Here's the current loop of the radar on the SFWMD's current weather conditions page. The eastward wobble from earlier is very noticeable.

The current position of Ian's eye is estimated to be 26.3°N, 82.5°W according to the NHC's 11 AM update, and they've said that it's a possibility that Ian may remain a hurricane further in the peninsula after landfall due to being both stronger and possibly having a faster motion across state. Parts of the east coast now have hurricane warnings as a result. If it manages to get off the east coast, it's expected to be roughly a 65 MPH tropical storm in the Atlantic Ocean between 8 PM Thursday and 8 PM Friday, and will curve into Georgia and/or South Carolina. Be careful and stay safe everyone. I'm praying for everyone in this storm's path.

St. James City has reported a gust to 80 on Weather Underground

Highest on NWS is at Punta Gorda and Venice at 61 mph gusts

Lost the wind measurements at Naples.

Definitely some 60 mph gusts here in Nokomis. Just large branches snapping so far.

I think they’re waiting for the recon to get in to the storm before pulling the trigger on a cat five. You might as well just flip a coin at this point.
