As someone who went through 40 inches of rain in a "no name" storm I cannot impress upon folks how many people who think they are faring well will be caught off guard. It was so hard to hear my neighbors responding on social media to water coming into their homes. River stages were updating in a timely manner noting records were likely. WPC and river stages are not exactly on the short list of weather links for most folks - especially those out of flood plains. Folks watch for wind. They watch for surge. River flooding comes later --- when the press has died back some -- and it still devastates lives. River flooding can add billions to damages in high population areas.

Sanibel is getting one of the longest durations in the clear of the eye of a major hurricane I can recall. I wouldn't want to be there, but it would be something to behold, hours upon hours inside the core.

Im just a little too far south to see it in Estero. It seems many of the cams are down on the island. Are there any photos?

It's always wild to me to hear pilots say stuff like that when they've flown through multiple cat 5s.

Makes me worry that overall hurricane dynamics are becoming more violent from warmer SSTs.

We're getting it pretty good in Sarasota. Consistent wind in the 40's and 50's with bands into the 80's. Lots of debris flying around. So far, a few momentary power outages that have come back. I had pumped 3,500 gallons out of my pool. I'll be pumping it again.

Interesting... NHC still shows it ending at the Brevard/Indian River County Line. Not sure how good the phone updates are. I got a Hurricane warning and a Tropical Storm Warning on my phone within 10 seconds of one another

Those winds are instantaneous and often are gusts. Not necessarily indicative of sustained winds and therefore category.

I'm in West Vero. I found it odd as well, because I know there hasnt been an "official one". It was one of the localized emergency broadcast alerts. I had to check twice to make sure it didnt say TORNADO, but it says Hurricane.
