Sanibel, you do so much for this forum. Please don't feel like you owe us anything on here right now. We appreciate your insight and your devotion to meteorology, but right now make sure you take the time to be with family

Oh my word, I am so sorry. I don't have words to say except you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I know the loss of a mother immensely myself from just a few years ago. I am so sorry.

It's completely destroyed in sections, the island is cut from the mainland, I found this picture from a different forum.

Winter 2020-2021 :cold:

All observations are in Tecumseh, OK unless otherwise noted.

Winter posts are focused mainly for Oklahoma & Texas.

Take any of my forecasts with a grain of salt, refer to the NWS, SPC, and NHC for official information

Never say Never with weather! Because ANYTHING is possible!

No surprise based on what happened yesterday. Anyone that has been on that causeway will understand why there was so much damage.

This is horrible.

Our hearts go out to Sanibel.

There is no doubt this will be the costliest hurricane in Florida history.

Abdullah wrote:Anyone else feel like Ian's reported wind field as per NHC is way too big? What are they basing this on? It's definitely not on-the-ground observations. I was in the Tropical Storm Wind Field for nearly a full day yesterday and we definitely never got 40 mph sustained wind speeds (although we did have some gusts in that level), and I was outside for a while and easily able to see what was going on.

As far as I understand, the TS-strength wind field (and for that matter, hurricane wind field and MSW) is generally where these winds are *capable* of occurring, not necessarily actually occurring. These winds would likely be TS force over water or along a shoreline, but due to land friction and topography, winds are a lot less consistent, and therefore it’s a lot harder to issue forecasts to the public with that level of nuance. With that in mind, they consider it better to warn for the upper bound, and not the lower bound or mean, so there’s a reduced risk of being caught off guard in the moment. Someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong

Sanibel, its been quite a few years since I've been actively involved here but I do still check up on and follow the discussions quite often. My heart sank when I read this. You've been here a long time and this is like losing one of our own. I am so sorry for your loss. Your family is in my prayers.

J & S fish camp (stayed there last winter) has tons of trees down and one of the rentals was destroyed by a falling tree. No power or water there.
