Widespread negative wind chill values across the state on the latest Euro.

Agree 1000%! The February 2021 Snowpocalypse and not having water for a week (I was lucky to have power, ironically enough because I live near a water treatment plant) diminished my love of Arctic outbreaks into Texas. Sure hope the state's power grid holds.

As someone who spent 4 days without power back then, yes, it was not fun. I’m skeptical about of the improvements as well, but we’ll see.

Will say, the IMBY details of course is always a tough sell beyond a few days. But this has not been a hard forecast to make. Some forecasters have seen this coming a month or two in advance, not the magnitude but that the pattern would shift to such an outcome of -EPO. -AO is a harder forecast but it eventually went along too.

We've come a long way from the days of believing an index when a model *shows* it happening but has no basis. Just like nowadays we gripe about model inconsistencies but we don't get as much fantasy snow runs as we used to, it's gotten better with better tools.

I too spent 4 days without power or heat. I have myself made drastic improvements since then. I had natural gas but with no power the blower wouldn't blow to work with the furnace. Now my generator has a tie into the furnace so I can blow hot air through the whole house for the amount of electricity of a light bulb. That would have been nice in 2021. Also added over a foot of insulation to my attic and sealed all the doors and windows better.

Let's hope Ercot put more effort in than I did.

I've never seen such a massive area below zero in the USA. I'm going to start preps to my home this weekend if this keeps up  .

It's December 1983 ALL OVER AGAIN on the 12z Euro! It's a literal Arctic Cannon!

There looks to be a tornado on the ground by US 259 and I-20 in Longview, TX right now.

*Edit - not yet confirmed but very strong rotation and may have been a CC drop.

Tornado threat ramping up in East Texas where three warnings are currently up, including the Kilgore/Longview area.

And maybe a PDS Tornado Watch about to be issued…

Winter people I disagree with would have trouble imagining a better pattern than that run. Not only extreme cold, but likely to have disturbances ride up out of the SWUS/northern Mexico.

Still too early to get hyped on details like that, but the trend is a winter lover’s friend right now

Just ridiculously cold and the temp difference across Texas is mind boggling.

The Tornado Watch has been issued, not a PDS. 80/60%

It will not be ‘83 again. I don’t think people appreciate just how long it was cold. That said, might want to start worrying about the grid again.

I certainly appreciate how cold it was and how long it was cold. I was a senior in high school that year. We tried to go duck hunting on Lake Texoma during that arctic outbreak and the ice was so thick in the shallow cove we were going to set our decoys in that myself and two grown men couldn’t even get it to crack.

The cold on the Euro is far enough west based that it would help with precip chances I would think as cheezy mentioned.

Really interesting stuff. I am kind of kicking myself for not getting a generator after 2021. But, I felt surely I wouldn't need it again for a long time...
