My friend and long-time (30+ yrs) cold-mongering coworker says it's going to get cold later in January. Hard to disagree that if the temperature is in the 80s in early January that it will probably get colder later in the month. However, I'd prefer it to stay as it is through spring, then warm up for the summer.

Hello everyone! Happy New Year! I finished my first semester at Mississippi State on campus a few weeks ago and will be returning to Starkville in a few weeks. Unfortunately, I spent Christmas sick and am just now getting over it. However, today was a great day for my school, as we won our bowl game in Tampa!

Also on a weather note, I think we are in fool's spring right now and winter will return later this month or in February. I have seen this pattern happen before and I highly doubt winter is over.

There’s no -EPO. It was supposed to turn negative mid month but now looks like it’s going to stay positive. The Pacific is totally screwing up our winter right now.

There’s no -EPO. It was supposed to turn negative mid month but now looks like it’s going to stay positive. The Pacific is totally screwing up our winter right now.

MJO appears to be moving in the right direction though (phases 8,1 and possibly 2) if you're rooting on a colder pattern toward mid to late Jan going into Feb. A two-week period of above average temps as we moved into January was pretty much baked in. Beyond that, I think you'll see modeling eventually pick up on the MJO trend as we go beyond week 2.

That’s an excellent point. I kinda had forgotten about the MJO but you’re right, it does appear to be moving in the right direction for colder weather.

As usual, model support this far out is going to flip around a lot.
