Re: Texas Winter 2022-2023
Austin is a dangerous place to drive this morning. KVUE is reporting people either jumped off a bridge to avoid sliding vehicles or may have been thrown from vehicles. Don't drive if you don't have to folks! Please!!!

Doubling accumulations and extending time 24 hrs…I guess in the weather forecasting world, it’s not where you start but how you finish ?

Get ready, a large portion of North Texas is about to become encased in ice over the next several hours. Hopefully, all of you got your grocery shopping done!

800-850mb level still quite warm (7-8 C) but hopefully will begin to cool the column enough to turn over to sleet

Lightning all the way back to Brownwood, also. It’s really picking up on radar. Looks to be a precip train forming, heading for the metroplex

Should stay in the clear until the main ULL reaches the state tomorrow…conditions should start deteriorating in your area starting around noon Wednesday

Temp hit 30 briefly today after dipping below freezing around 730 AM. Hovered around 29 most of the day and now at 28. Branches are starting to have ice on them but not heavy, mainly from freezing fog. Roads are fairly clear at this point. NWS Aus?SAT indicate anywhere from 0.25" to 0.75" ice accumulation. That would definitely bring down some branches and probably impair power. Our subdivision is on well water and if we lose power, we lose water. Tub is full. We have a 400 ft elevation gain from wells to homes. Wish they had backup generators onsite but they do not. Could be a long two days but at least not as bad as Feb two years ago when the temp got to 2.8F.
Be safe out there! In our part of the start we expect the heaviest precip to occur tomorrow night into Wednesday. If y’all remain at that 28-29 mark, it’s going to be rough out there.
Here in the Austin area, I’m still not convinced this is going to be a bad event for us. In the outlying areas of the county … yes, definitely. But for most of the county we have been holding today around 32-33 degrees. I’ve seen these events so many times over the years and usually when we hit the floor on temps, they don’t budge much further. To really see an ice impact, you’ve got to be in the 30 degree and below range.
Most of the short range models keep us here and even the 18z NAM warms us up a degree or two. The WRF-ARW and RGEM are the only models I’ve seen which drop our temps a few degrees over the next 48 hours.
UPDATE … well, unfortunately, temperatures here did fall into the upper 20s and this morning every elevated roadway of bridge is ice glazed. We’ve already had a traffic fatality and tons of accidents across the area. And this event in terms of QPF is just getting started!

This airmass is the real deal and King Canadian model had this from the start. Very unique set of circumstances parked this Siberian HP right over our state…
