Yikes! It's too cold to go outside with temps in the 40s, much less go on a 3-4 hour bike ride. 70s is better but 80s is pretty good biking weather. I've biked every day the last 9 days.
Toughen the f up.
If I can run 5-10 miles in 70s and 80s (albeit much slower than 30s and 40s), you can bike in 60s much less 70s.
You’re getting soft in your older age.

How far do you run when the temperature is 95-105 in July? I'm riding 30-40 miles with those warm temps. Nothing better than finishing a summer ride with salt crusted all over my face and arms. I rode the Alvin Coastal Century (100 miles) in late October of 1989 when the starting temp was at 32F. Wasn't too enjoyable, but I was 32 back then. That same year, I rode the Katy Flatland Century in right at 4 hrs. That's averaging 25 mph with no stops for 4 hrs. We rode 31 miles the first hour. I'm no around the block at 3 mph bike rider. You need to toughen up.

I noticed many bluebonnets along Brays Bayou this past week. Azaleas, redbuds, and dogwoods are blooming (you can tell them by their bark). Spring has sprung. Water temperatures near shore are nearing 80F now. Looks like Thursday's Arctic blast that some were hoping to produce snow in NE Texas will only produce cold rain. It'll knock our high down into the 60s on Friday then back to the 70s and 80s. Long range GFS is forecasting more Canadian air here in TX around the 14th, but the GFS was forecasting a foot of snow in D-FW this week at that same range out. I'm declaring winter to be over. My new wall is stronger than ever.
I occasionally will run 5-10 miles in Summer but I loathe it. I only do it when I have a time crunch and can’t make the indoor track at our gym.
Here’s why…. I’m an all or nothing guy. I rarely go running for leisure. It is to compete against myself and do personal bests. Once the temp gets above 65, every 5 degrees will add 15 or so seconds to my mile splits, especially when humidity is involved. It is like running in quicksand and it pisses me off. Also, running does not equal biking in heat as I’ve done triathlons in the past. It’s much easier to bike in 90 plus than run, although I still don’t like it.
All of my personal bests have come below 60 degrees, and most have come below 50 degrees. Two have come in the 30s and one in the 20s. It’s nothing for me to run below 20 either, although my splits start going back up below 20.
My average mile split on a 10 mile run will be in the 6.5 minute range but when it gets above 75 and humid it will balloon over 8 minutes per mile.
Cold is so much easier to deal with than heat. Heat will kill you in an instant too, even if you’re an elite athlete. Cold will not if you’re prepared.
