Re: SIO: FREDDY - Tropical Cyclone
Bulletin of March 12 at 04:50 am local time in Reunion (03.50 am local time in Mayotte):
TROPICAL CYCLONE number 7
(FREDDY)
Maximum winds (averaged over 10 minutes) estimated at sea: 120 km/h.
Estimated maximum gusts at sea: 165 km/h.
Estimated pressure at the center: 983 hPa.
Position on March 12 at 04 local time: 17.5 South / 36.9 East.
Distance from the Reunion coast: 1960 km to the sector: WEST
Distance from Mayotte: 1020 km to the sector: WEST-SOUTH-WEST
Movement: NORTH-WEST, at 7 km/h.
System Information:
- FREDDY now evolves on earth. It is weakening but for the moment keeps an impressive cloud configuration with an eye that is still very distinct. It therefore remains classified as a tropical cyclone with maximum winds which have however weakened compared to last night.
- FREDDY is sinking inland but will continue to generate violent gusts in its path until tomorrow. Very heavy rains are moving inland from today, not only over Mozambique but also over southern Malawi. They will continue for at least the next 3 days and will be likely to cause widespread flooding and landslides in mountainous areas through accumulation. Residents are encouraged to follow the instructions issued by local authorities.
- In the course of next week, an exit at sea of FREDDY is possible but the environment in which the system should then evolve, does not appear favorable to a re-intensification.

That seems extremely premature. It’s not dissipating that fast, and even as a TD there still need to be advisories initiated on it.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Not unusual to see JTWC issue their final warning as soon as a TC moves inland, especially when it's not threatening US military interests.

Re: SIO: FREDDY - Depression
This is the last warning by RSMC.
Bulletin of March 13 at 4:29 p.m. local time in Reunion (3.29 p.m. local time in Mayotte):
A low pressure system is currently present over the South West Indian Ocean.
DEPRESSION ON EARTH number 7
(FREDDY)
Maximum winds (averaged over 10 minutes) estimated at sea: 45 km/h.
Estimated maximum gusts at sea: 65 km/h.
Estimated pressure at the center: 999 hPa.
Position on March 13 at 4 p.m. local time: 16.5 South / 34.5 East.
Distance from the Reunion coast: 2240 km to the sector: WEST
Distance from Mayotte: 1220 km to the sector: WEST-SOUTH-WEST
Movement: NORTH-WEST, at 6 km/h.
System Information:
- Overland depression FREDDY continues to track in a general northwesterly direction, with a localized center near the border between Mozambique and the southern tip of Malawi.
- FREDDY should remain at a weakened stage in terms of winds over the next few days. However, it will continue to generate very abundant rains in the interior of Mozambique (Zambézia province, north of Sofola and Manica provinces, south-east of Tete province, south of Niassa province) and over southern Malawi.
- These heavy rains will continue until Tuesday evening in the interior and until Wednesday on the Zambezian coast. They are likely to cause very large floods and landslides in mountainous areas.
- In the middle of the week, an exit at sea from FREDDY in the Mozambique Channel is planned, but at a very weakened stage. The environmental conditions in which the system is expected to evolve are not favorable for future re-intensification.
- The definitive attenuation of the rains over Mozambique and Malawi is expected from Wednesday evening.
- The inhabitants of Mozambique and Malawi are invited to exercise the greatest caution and to remain attentive to the safety instructions of the local authorities.
- This is the last regular follow-up bulletin of the FREDDY system by the RSMC

Re: SIO: FREDDY - Remnants
Freddy has officially dissipated, finally ending his long adventure. Over 5 weeks! However, this storm has caused over 300 deaths so we won't be seeing the name again.

I was busy all week so this response is late. Ioke has 85.265 units. I don't know why Wikipedia kept listing the preliminary ACE when the best track has been out for so long. I hope it will list the best track ACE for Freddy when that comes out as well.
