Re: Texas Summer 2023
105°F here at 4pm in Wharton. Heat index only at 109°F though so it’s not as bad as a few other days we’ve had here.

DallasAg wrote:DFW sitting at 108 as of 3:00p. This summer seems like our daily high temps have been occurring later in the day than most summers (just my perception). Lots of cases we peak closer to 5:00 than normally I think of 3:00-4:00 being the max. Might make a run at 110, if not today then tomorrow.
Not sure I buy the hourly reports coming out of Comanche. Currently 116F, and they've had a lot of days this summer > 110F. Feels a little off, even being in a region where they're naturally going to be a little hotter.
Agree with the others about the comparisons to 2011. For DFW even with 71 days >= 100, only 19 were >= 105. This summer DFW has already had 16 (including today), with surely more to come.
Bottom line: this sucks. Sept (probably mid-Sept at that) needs to get here. Stat.
Not sure we will have to wait that long necessarily. If the 12z Euro is right about the EPAC crossover and the shifting ridge, we could have another system in the Gulf soon. The Euro shows it strengthening too which is interesting.

Same in Longview, which is 2F higher than forecast. Decent chance we hit 110F over the next couple of days. Forecast high Friday is 107F and Saturday 106F.

Excuse me. But, WTF. 111 IMBY.
I moved from West Texas (Midland) to escape this crap.
It’s only 102 on a station there.
When did the desert move to DFW?

This heat dome means business. It's probably a top 5 ridge event for us. DFW may encroach top 3 hottest hi temps all time within the next 3 days. Tomorrow several within the area will be 110-114.

Re: Texas Summer 2023
Roughly a 35 degree warmup between 8-4 today. I'm sure it's happened in winter or spring before but I can't remember such a rapid heat blast in the summer. Just disgusting.

Hit 110 at Mabry, 109 at Bergstrom here in Austin today. Well...at least the days are getting shorter.

2023? Well, it's a "El Nino that never came"
Haha I feel this! It sure does seem that way. Back in May I was expecting at least average rainfall for Texas this summer. Yet I haven’t recorded anything measurable the entire summer so far.
This is something I investigated and I think it has to do with a weak Bermuda high. Strong el nino and weak bermuda high is a bad combo for TX.

I'm convinced that my tiredness and lack of motivation is because of it. Either that or turning 41..........
Normally I handle summer heat ok, but this year is just kicking my butt.

Re: Texas Summer 2023
With no major pattern shift on the horizon, this summer looks to outpace last summer on 100 days in dfw by next weekend. At this rate we could end up #3 or 4 on the all time list

If we reach 110+ today that would beat any summer since 2000 for max high. Unbelievable. Last summer was 4th warmest average. No El Nino year occupies top 5. Only 2006 is #10.

And what I remember from summer 2000 was that it really started kinda late, but once it got going it was insane. Labor Day weekend was brutal. IIRC on Labor Day it was already 100 by 10:00a on the way to 111.
But the glimmer of hope for us (I know it was 23 years ago and a lot has changed) was that within a couple of weeks after that we got rain again, and the fall was gloriously cold and wet. Nov 2000 is the coldest average max and 3rd wettest. By December it was ice storms, long periods below freezing, and snow on New Year's Eve.

Re: Texas Summer 2023
According to our local NWS office, we (Austin) are a lock for recording the hottest summer on record.
Even saw a story last night on how the railroad tracks here are starting to warp due to the intense and consistent heat. Incredible!
