Was looking at the doppler velocities too... saw that rotational couplet. Cell has since crossed over the negative to positive velocity line, so it's hard to tell whether a rotational couplet still exists, though it looks like just from base reflectivity that that cell has weakened some.

I don't have WxTap (or StormLab) but I'd pay attention to that cell offshore SSW of Galveston, heading NNE quite rapidly ...

Tornado just NW of my location in Friendswood

#7 Postby KatDaddy » Tue Nov 18, 2003 12:00 am

Earlier I saw blue lightining from arcing powerlines as a tornado passed just to my NW over Friendswood.

Way to close for comfort and the tornado kit was together. I watched the cell form over central Brazoria County.

Very early Prelim would indicate a small TOR:

0258 UNK FRIENDSWOOD GALVESTON TX 2946 9498 TORNADO TOUCHDOWN NEAR FM 528 AND FM HIGHWAY 518. ROOF DAMAGE TO SEVERAL HOMES WITH NUMEROUS TREES UPROOTED. DAMAGE FOCUSED ALONG KEYSTONE...EAST EDGEWOOD...AND 400 BLO (HOU)

Without ground truth, one can't guess F-scale damage (I certainly can't),
but this would lead me to think perhaps an F0, probably an F1 or 2 based on damage proximity. Radar didn't honk a large TOR so we'll see.

Reports on the tv indicate your early assessment is probably correct. It was very obvious on the radar when it was over the damaged area. KD did see a definite touchdown to say the least and that same cell went right over Ticka without incident. We were chatting through it and it did get rough but she reported no damage. I'm up tp 7.25" so far since noon and we still have another line to come through.

7.25" in the last 12 or so hours is 0.55" to 0.6" of an inch per hour on average... I understand there were rainfall rates of 2 inches per hour this afternoon across the Houston, Texas area.

Unfortunately it looks like you still have some more to come, I see showers and t-storms refiring to your west. Time for me to get some sleep while I can, which will probably only be about 4 hours the way this line is moving now. Stay safe out there.

Weatherbug reported a 4.92/in rate briefly during that heaviest cell when we had the tornado warnings!!
