This thread concerns third-generation retired names, i.e. names that are the 3rd iterations of that letter on its naming list, and are replacements of replacement names.

Idalia and Imelda fit that description: Idalia replaced Irma which itself replaced Irene (the original I name on List 3), and Imelda replaced Ingrid which replaced Iris (the original I name on List 5).

However, Isaac doesn't fit the criteria, because it's the original I name on List 4. In fact, it's the only I name from the initial six naming lists that has not been retired yet (the other five being Isabel, Ivan, Irene, Iris and Isidore).

Crazy did make the typo that Imelda should have been in 2025, not 2024.

It's looking extremely likely right now that Melissa is gonna be the second third gen name (and first female third gen name) to be retired. Right now, the models are showing her potentially being an extremely strong C5 causing tons of damage in Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba, and she could also possibly be Gilbert on steroids as well or even a mixture of Gilbert and Mitch considering how slow she's moving. Also, it seems like there is an "M" curse too, and for some reason I had an extremely strong feeling the second third gen name to be retired was gonna be an "M" named storm. But unlike the "I" storms, there are a TON more fish in the sea of M names and we won't have that much of a problem trying to find a replacement for names like Melissa, as M is the second most common initial after "J".

I just realized that if 01L had been properly named in 2023, then Lee would have been Margot, and we could potentially have yet another consecutive 3-year streak of M-named category 5 hurricanes (after the infamous Matthew-Maria-Michael sequence from 2016-2018). Honestly quite incredible that the 13th named storm has been on such a roll lately (maybe 13 is truly an unlucky number in the tropics), especially when you consider that the neighboring letter "N" has only managed to reach major status once (Nicole 2016).

God forbid, this could all be irrelevant if Marco decides to blow up into a Cat 5 next year so that we still end up with a 3-year "M" cat 5 streak even with 01L 2023 left unnamed.
