After getting a nice rain Sunday night we're ready to switch gears on Wednesday with a Red Flag Warning and then on Thursday with the first Fire Weather Watch in effect for the first time I can remember. A nice reminder that we're still in a drought.

Mathematically, tomorrow's (August 31) average temperature at Austin Camp Mabry must be 90.5° for 2023 to tie 2011 for the hottest summer on record. The way the NWS calculates things, the average must be 91.0°.

The NWS is forecasting a high of 103° and a low of 76°, for an average of 89.5°.

August 2011 will remain the hottest month on record, with August 2023 in second and July 2023 in third.

The low this morning at Austin Camp Mabry was 71°. This afternoon's high will have to be 111° (NWS calculation method) or 110° (pure mathematics) for 2023 to tie 2011 for the hottest summer on record.

A quick reanalysis of the summer so far you can kind of make the assumption the heat ridge has been extended by the -PDO cold patch to the southwest of California/Mexico and east of Hawaii. At the beginning of the season it had roots down in Mexico (June) before expanding northward.

Mathematically (each day has equal weight):
89.50°...2011 (16,468÷184)
89.44°...2023 (16,457÷184)

National Weather Service's method (determine the average temperature for each month and then average the 3 monthly averages):
89.47°...2011 (268.42÷3)
89.41°...2023 (268.22÷3)
