Take advantage of the "warmth" today as we return to the 50s by early afternoon, and then we take the downward turn after about 2 PM or so here in the 4-County Metroplex as winds turn to the north and the motherload of Arctic air plunges into Texas. Of course, Denton and Collin Counties will be the first to go down, but eventually all of us will take the tumble as the afternoon wears on. We will all be in the teens by Sunday morning and not get above freezing until next Wednesday.
Still working on the precipitation outlook, but as mentioned in previous posts, won't really know good details until we are within 24 hours of the start of the wintry mix (which should begin late Sunday afternoon into the day Monday). What we can say at this point, however, is that the precipitation still looks to be on the light side and most of it will be in the form of freezing drizzle /sleet pellets with perhaps a few flakes here in the DFW area. Most - but perhaps not all - of the accumulating snow should stay to our north, with the best of it being in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Now, time to get the homestead prepared. I am just glad this is not going to be a repeat of February 2021!

I know this is the Winter thread, but did anyone else in OKC feel the earthquakes last night?! A total of 6, two were a4.2 and 4.4 on the Richter scale. Sounded like a shotgun going off.

Re: Texas Winter 2023-2024
12z ICON was slightly better than previous runs. The vort that we have been watching didn't cleanly shear off from the parent trough and that has resulted in the energy being strung out. The model runs from a few days ago that were really doing something with this system had that vort nice and compact as it came onshore. Now you can see that trailing piece of energy vs. a nice compact vort. The 18z Euro yesterday had things more compact and the 12z ICON has it a bit more compact. If you are pulling for a miracle, then that is one of the things to watch over the next 12-18 hrs. Lots of other stuff going on, but this has been something I've been watching.

By models, im not sure. By our local forecast it’s right on time. It wouldn’t surprise me if it isn’t earlier than modeling since all cold front usually come through here faster and colder.

Not really any surprises in the 12z runs. Overall, things trended slightly dryer...

You can always tell when the models aren’t going in our favor when the ones who were posting so frequently two days ago are now MIA

The 12z Candaian still makes a run at single digits 3 mornings in a row at DFW. The lowest looks like 5F, and the other two mornings just miss single digits. Any surprise snow cover probably pushes temps over the top for 3 straight single digit lows.

Yeah when it’s dead here you know it’s not good. I stopped checking models myself for sanity sake last night.
I’m planning for school Tuesday if it’s just cold or patchy freezing drizzle.
At least we have something to watch and some cold.

Re: Texas Winter 2023-2024
Extremely cold and dry air Always strip away moisture to some amount. However as stated already this wave is still 40 hrs away, and, if you can dig south and tap some of that over riding gulf moisture then we may have something better to talk about. Otherwise it will be limited in precipitation and coverage.

I live about 3 miles from the epicenter. In all, 18 earthquakes reported by the USGS from last night around 9:30pm until this morning. 3 of which were over 4. the second 4 last night and the one this morning were the longest. No snow, so instead we got earthquakes. LOL

It was actually snowing earlier, it wasn't the tiny snowflakes, it was larger ones! I have a video of the snowflakes coming down.
