Which Replacement Names Are the Weirdest, and What Name Would You Have Rather Picked?

#1 Postby Category5Kaiju » Sat Sep 04, 2021 6:28 am

Here are my top personal ones:

Rita —> Robin (not Rina)
Katrina —> Kathleen (not Katia)
Michael —> Maurice (not Milton)
Dennis —> Donald (not just Don)
Fabian —> Fletcher (not Fred)
Georges —> Gregory (not Gaston)
Joaquin —> Jeffrey (not Julian as Julia is already a List 2 name)

Just for hypothetical funsies of course

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

There's a ton of good names from the 50's, 60's and 70's that they just removed from the lists for whatever reason and haven't used again. Of course they were all female names but still.

Amelia
Becky (I'd take over both Beryl and Bertha)
Dorothy
Edith
Evelyn
Gail and Ginger easily over Gert
Holly
Ivy
Jane
Jenny
Jill
Jodie
Judith
Justine
Linda
Lucy
Margo
Marsha
Mary
Molly
Nancy over Nana 8 days a week
Norma
Penny
Rachel and Ruth I'd take over Rina
Sabrina
Sheila
Shirley
Susan
Tina
Vanessa

There's even Roger from the Army/Navy Phonetic Alphabet.

Maybe not the weirdest but here's my official request for the entire Gilligan's Island cast to be named Storms for a single year; that list would include:
Gilligan
Jonas (The Skipper)
Thurston (Howell III)
Eunice (Mr. Howell's wife)
Roy (Professor)
Ginger (the Movie-star)
and my personal fav - Mary Ann

I’ll go with the obvious: Katrina and Rita probably has the weirdest replacements given how close they were to the original names. For Katrina I’d choose Kendra or Kirsten and for Rita I’d choose Rena (pronounced Ray-nuh) or Ramona.

Given the replacement has to be a female name that probably should be Robyn.

Ironically, the same happened to 2023's EPAC replacements: Dora -> Debora, and Otis -> Otilio.

Not direct replacements, but 1979 Frederic -> 2003 Fabian -> Fred. I suppose if Fred is retired it'll be replaced by Fabiano.

And since today is the Christian feast of all saints, the future Caribbean hurricane will probably be named after an Archangel, Raphael. Another peculiar name to put on a hurricane that has a good chance of wreaking havoc somewhere between Louisiana and the Dominican Republic. but anyway i'm sure that nobody thought of the Archangel when choosing the name Rafael for the list of names.

This is just my humble opinion. :D

I would have picked June or Jean

I don't think this one has been talked about before, but Stan ---> Sean. Like replacing Rita with Rina, they pretty much swapped out a letter, replacing the T with an E. They could have just spelt it differently and spelt it Shawn instead, or they could have replaced it with names like Sylvester, Silas, Sawyer, etc.

I'm a bit surprised no one has mentioned this case so far, but I thought the name "Odalys" was a rather peculiar name to replace a name with, even more so in Odile's case. They had so many cool options at the time to make that change, like Otilio, Otavio, Orson, Ovidio, or maybe even Odilon, since they don't like to change their names too much from time to time. But they choose Odalys......Oh God...

If Katia ever gets the boot, they'll probably replace it with Katie. Lol.

Rita and Rina sound almost alike. Definitely think they could have come up with something else. Not the case with Stan and Sean though, at least. Or Katrina and Katia.

(Is it bad that I didn't even notice the one letter difference between Stan and Sean until someone brought it up? )

Paloma ---> Paulette is another weird one in my opinion, especially now that there are 3 variants of the name "Paul" on the Atlantic names lists. Those being Paulette and Paula, which are feminine variants of Paul, and Pablo, which is the Spanish translation of Paul.

Weirdest names: Ike followed by Milton. I wouldn't have changed them. I kind of like the names.

Worst replacements: Katia and Rina. How about Kelsey and
Rosalina.Francine was also a bad choice. I get it is a male name(replaced Florence), but it is too similar to the retired name "Frances".

No, because "t" is a consonant and "e" is a vowel. They are entirely different apart from the spelling.
