Re: SIO: HIDAYA - Strong Tropical Storm
STRONG TROPICAL STORM number 10
(HIDAYA)
Maximum winds (averaged over 10 minutes) estimated at sea: 110 km/h.
Maximum gusts estimated at sea: 155 km/h.
Estimated pressure at center: 985 hPa.
Position on May 4 at 4 a.m. local time: 7.9 South / 40.6 East.
Distance from the Reunion coast: 2145 km to sector: NORTH-WEST
Distance from Mayotte: 750 km to sector: NORTH-WEST
Travel: WEST, at 13 km/h.
System information:
- HIDAYA is still remaining at the end of the night, at the stage of a strong tropical storm. It is located less than 150 km from the Tanzanian coast (less than 100 km from Mafia Island) and continues to move towards the west-northwest while maintaining a compact structure (strongest winds in a radius less than 50 to 100 km around the center).
- Despite a significant weakening expected in the coming hours, HIDAYA remains a threatening phenomenon for Tanzania and of record intensity for this area of the basin (the most intense ever observed northwest of 10°S/45°E). It could land or circulate in the immediate vicinity of the coast of Tanzania this afternoon at the stage of moderate tropical storm, which is a very rare event for the area. It should then dissipate during the night from Saturday to Sunday.
- Over the next few hours, the weather will continue to deteriorate on the Tanzanian coast, mainly affecting the area between Dar Es Salaam and Mtwara, with in particular a risk of very intense rains which could cause flooding. Strong winds and dangerous seas are also expected locally on the coastal fringe of the Pwani region (including Mafia Island). A probable improvement should appear on Sunday morning. Residents are invited to keep informed of the evolution of the forecasts and to comply with the instructions of local authorities.

Re: SIO: HIDAYA - Remnants
Hidaya was only the third tropical cyclone in recorded history to make landfall in Tanzania, the others being Tropical Depression Atang in 2002 and a cyclone in 1952.
