I did my Skywarn training/certification in Warren, Michigan in 2011...one of the most useful classes I ever took. I have long since completed the advanced online course, through UCAR. It goes a bit further into the field. There is also a severe storm forecasting course on their site, which is also free to take. Highly recommended.
