Off topic here, but I'll never forget Delta's intensification. It had some of the most compact pressure gradients I'd ever seen, and with its pinhole eye it seemed like it was going to continue intensifying right into the top echelon of Caribbean hurricanes on record. Then the unexpected mid-layer shear kicked in and wrecked it just as quickly as it had deepened.

Beryl is a fairly different storm, but it does remind me of some in recent years, like Delta, Laura, and Ida, that have almost entirely "skipped" category 3.

With the readings coming out of the HH, an upgrade to Cat 4 is likely I would think.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

I am always mesmerized by satellite loops of major storms. Terrifyingly beautiful.

Beryl said no to a season ramp-up. Full throttle. What a beautiful and terrifying storm so early!

There it is- category 4 Beryl on June 30th. Officially the first cat 4 in the Atlantic basin in the month of June (Audrey used to be, but later was revised to a 125 mph peak).

Tolakram, thanks for all the good satellite images and info. Always great at what you do.

I just can’t believe what I’m seeing with Beryl. Grenada may be unrecognizable I’m afraid.

I find it very fascinating that a couple days ago we were talking about possible dissipation in the Western Caribbean Sea. Now we have a category 4 hurricane that might only have minor disruptions before it approaches the Yucatan. It just shows that things can change very fast in a short amount of time!

The ramp-up from TS to symmetrical major at that lat/long is mouth-dropping.

Does anybody know when the first category 5 hurricane of a season was? Also, if this doesn't stop we may wind up with a June category 5 hurricane by this evening

Some dry air in its path

that band running before the core should protect it from the dry air.
