I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Emily should be getting pretty nervous about her record right now...

Cat 5 would be something. Let's see what the drop sondes say. 157 knots does seem quite convincing in fl winds.

A MDR CATEGORY 4 MAJOR HURRICANE.
IN JUNE 30.
THAT MADE A 150 MPH LANDFALL.
IN JULY 1.
THIS SAME SYSTEM REACHES CATEGORY 5.
IN JULY 2.
BECOMING THE EARLIEST CATEGORY 5 EVER RECORDED IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.

Ladies and gentleman, please meet Hurricane Beryl. :D

Looks like a double max on that side. Maybe the start of an EWRC again

Somehow I would think Emily would be more pissed that she wasn't retired.

I believe Sandy hit Jamaica as a cat 1 but this should be stronger than Sandy if it hits Jamaica. Ivan might have been the last major hurricane to hit Jamaica directly but Dean also passed just south of Jamaica.

Ivan also passed just to the south of Jamaica. The last major hurricane to make direct landfall in Jamaica was Gilbert in 1988:

Ivan danced around the islands and headed north. Hope it high stays strong!

The last 3 storms named Emily have all been absolute wimps...so maybe there is madness there.

They seem to wait until there's a couple of to upgrade to Cat 5 intensity, the last one wasn't quite there so we might see one at 2am (or a midnight special statement) if the plane stays out there and it doesn't weaken.

Also, Beryl looks the best it has yet. Finally, we catch a storm at her peak (might still be intensifying tho).

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

Looks to me to be bouncing off the high now? Not liking the ridge being felt now, not wanting to see the high move further east.

For consistency's sake, if they used the 151 kt 700 mb wind to justify 135 kt, then they need to use 157 kt 700 mb wind to justify 140 kt.

I hope this isn't too far off topic, but could somebody go to Levi's video for today (https://youtu.be/HaBJbrV77II) and take a look at the patches of cumulus to the north of 96L, please? Between about 12:10 and 12:40 in the video, when he has the view of Beryl and 96L on a loop, there are some obvious, long-wavelength "ripples," for lack of a better term, that pass through the broken cumulus layer. They actually seem to affect the density, dispersion, and/or configuration of the cumulus. Are they some sort of gravity-wave phenomenon? If so, what would be causing them to propagate over such a large area? There doesn't seem to be any synchronized activity in the vicinity of 96L that would be comparable in scale...

Thanks!

Ironically, despite previous comments that recon may have missed Beryl at its peak, they might be in when it's visual presentation is at its best. Ultra-cold cloudtops.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Well, I'm not sure if I'm surprised Emily wasn't retired or that Lili in 2002 was and really shouldn't have been imo. Also even as a Canadian Igor 2010 I still think was also an inappropriate retirement although I do understand the severity of the storm for Newfoundland.

Anyways, I am getting off topic.
