JTWC forecast it to reach cat 4 intensity so barely managing to get to cat 1 is underperforming relative to the JTWC forecasts a few days ago. Forecast has it going directly over Shanghai which might cause some problems there.

Crazy to think this is the system that some ensembles thought would peak at sub-900 mb ten days ago. It's almost like Pamela-level underperformance, although models adjusted to the weaker solutions much much more quickly than they did for Pamela.

Great news for Shanghai.

Still the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai since 1949. But yeah, would've been a lot worse if those earlier forecasts panned out.
