MED: 02M/Unnamed (ODETTE) - Midget Cyclone over the Black Sea

#1 Postby Landy » Fri Sep 20, 2024 10:55 pm

A non-insignificant number of deterministic models have been pretty adamant on there being an organizing low in the Black Sea the next few days, with some variation. Whether it ends up actually being classifiable as a (sub)tropical cyclone is another story, but this seems quite unusual for the Black Sea nonetheless. Waters are unusually warm right now, around or above 26C in the eastern side of the sea, which could be contributing to this.

CyclonicWX currently has a METEOSAT-9 floater positioned over it; it doesn't look bad, and ASCAT does suggest there's a closed circulation.

Aha, I was about to create this thread myself. Radar is available from Trebizond in Turkey https://www.mgm.gov.tr/eng/radar.aspx?rG=anm&rR=61&rU=ppi#sfB

To me that looks like it could be classified as tropical system.

This cyclone was unoffically named "Odette" by the 'Mediterranean Cyclone Center'.

Which cyclone was designated 01M? I didn't see any thread about it on Storm2K.

It was Storm Avgi, which formed in the eastern MED SEA near Cyprus.

I completely missed the thread from early in the year! It had already been moved to the 2024 archive...

Links to the threads for both 2024 storms has been added to the master list of Medicane threads.
You can access this list at the main page of the Storm Archives Forum.
