Looks like duel towers going up and wrapping around the center, usually means go time when you see that. I think we'll see a significant strengthening phase starting within the next couple of hours.

Duval schools closed for rest of week.
Escambia and Santa Rosa are the western most counties in Florida. Schools in both counties are closed tomorrow.

Looks good enough for 973 or maybe 972 if it's deemed a really good drop.

Pressure down a mbar or two since the last pass. It's been slowly strengthening all day but no RI yet...

Two hot towers going off N and NE of the center. Let's see if this helps wall off the dry air. Needs to do this overnight if we are to see RI to MH status.

I'm visiting family in Volusia county in the Atlantic and I can't believe the Indian River looks like this for a storm hundreds of miles away not even landfalling here. I've lived in Florida my whole life and seen the "big ones" and this is unlike anything I've ever seen.
I hope all our Floridian, Georgian and visiting friends stay safe.
Is that NSB??
Close, that pic was in Oak Hill. I'm further north atm around Edgewater.

That may change tho.....this is an evolving event....impacts will be widespread unfortunately....im not sure how these school districts make decisions...regarding Helene....but im sure they are being advised by many agencies.....
The decision won't change unless it is a drastic change. I work for Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the superintendent met with Broward's superintendent and they made the decision together. I also am a union representative and we pushed for it but it was a no. The only thing that changed is that outdoor events are to be moved indoors.
So much for the joint statement. Now Broward is closed and Dade remains open. SMH

I just don’t see it. Betty Davis was just on Channel 10 here predicting 45-55 mph gusts at noon tomorrow across Miami. I don’t see how they can justify being open during dismissal

35mm isn’t very impressive. But I don’t know if that’s more or less than before since it wasn’t reporting.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

I have friends just west of Gainesville who are trying to decide whether to go more east. I can’t seem to find clear weather info for that area. Does anyone know what to expect around the Newberry/Archer area?

Schools closed here in Escambia county for tomorrow, playing it by ear on Friday. So all schools across the Panhandle are closed tomorrow.

A lot of parents will probably keep their kids home tomorrow. I work in palm beach and everyone already decided their kids were going to be home tomorrow before they announced closures this afternoon.

Re: ATL: HELENE - Hurricane - Discussion
Due to the dry air entrainment earlier and the slow process of working it out, the pressure gradient is a bit flat and the max winds are fairly removed from the center. However, the windfield is reasonably symmetrical, which is favorable for RI to occur once convection really gets going in the eyewall. Judging by the recent towers popping off, it seems likely we are in the initial stages of seeing that occur. Considering that the starting point is with pressure in the low 970s, the ceiling is pretty high for what this *could* achieve in a relatively short amount of time.
