Freddy. And it's notable regardless due to killing almost 1500 people.

I apologize for mentioning it...the toll of human life is just too much...

So far I've only assumed the Atlantic, but if we're doing a global list based solely on casualties this would be it. The ones I didn't fill in are the only commonly used letters without a TC with 1000+ deaths so I can't easily find the deadliest storm for those letters.

A - Agnes (1984)
B - Bopha (2012)
C -
D - Daniel (2023)
E -
F - Fifi (1974)
G - Gordon (1994)
H - Harriet (1962)
I - Ida (1945)
J - Jeanne (2004)
K - Katrina (2005)
L - Linda (1997)
M - Mitch (1998)
N - Nargis (2008)
O -
P - Paul (1982)
R -
S - Sidr (2007)
T - Thelma (1991)
U -
V - Vera (1959)
W - Wanda (1956)

Hazel for me for H. It was bad from Haiti to the Carolinas thru the Middle Atlantic States then into Canada a path of destruction on the coast then well inland. I remember it well!

Teban54 wrote:Back in 2016-2018, the "M monster" trend started to emerge after Matthew, Maria and Michael, to the point where people were "watching out" for Melissa (2019). Thankfully, that trend didn't continue in later years, although there were a few close calls with L storms that did or did not hit land (Lorenzo, Laura, Larry, Lee).

Looks like 2024 wanted to reconvene the M monster trend.

M seems to be a "boom or bust" letter the last decade. There have been monster M storms (Matthew, Maria, Michael, Milton) and puny or forgettable M storms (Melissa, Mindy, Marco, Margot) with Martin in between.

I realize that some of the hurricanes have a recency factor that may make them more popular. Because If this list was asked pre-2017 I would likely have a very different list so I will try to control for that with what I think the most infamous storm with each letter is. If there isn't any storm that I think is sufficiently notorious than I simply will say there isn't a hurricane in that category. This list is also hard because certain storms may be very famous in some areas in not others.

A: Andrew (1992)
B: Betsy (1965)
C: Camille (1969)
D: Dorian (2019)
E: Edna (1954)
F: Flora (1963)
G: Gordon (1994)
H: Helene (2024)
I: Irma (2017)
J: Janet (1955)
K: Katrina (2005)
L: Laura (2020)
M: Mitch (1998)
N: Nate (2017)
O: Opal (1995)
P: Paloma (2008)
R: Rita (2005)
S: Sandy (2012)
T: Tomas (2010)
V: I do not believe there are any particularly famous V storms that would rise to the level of being infamous. Probably the most known V is Vince from 2005 though.
W: Wilma (2005)

For me personally. A=Alicia
And I will jump to H for Harvey
I have been thru many cyclones, don't remember some, but Alicia and Harvey impacted my world in 2 very different ways. So, for now, those are my top 2. (Personally speaking)
