Intense Mid-latitude Cyclone off the US West Coast

#1 Postby WaveBreaking » Tue Nov 19, 2024 12:57 pm

An intense mid-latitude cyclone is currently rapidly deepening off the Pacific Northwest coast. Most models have its pressure down to the 940s by 18 hours.

The European model shows >85kt gusts (yellow) off the coast, with some areas approaching 90kts near the center.

GFS Simulated IR shows a large eye feature showing up during its peak, as well as a secondary low spiraling around the main one after maturity.

GeoColor imagery also shows hazy/milky seas near the low’s center, which is a sign of very agitated seas.

Currently at or near its peak intensity at around 942 mbar, which ties it with the October 2021 bomb cyclone. Also there’s a nice eye-like feature on visible like the GFS forecasted.

That is intense looking. Is this considered sub-tropical? What are the wind speeds?

No, its a purely extra tropical cyclone. Its very different, but still beautiful! Winds are probably gusting to 100mph in areas of the ocean.

Secondary low (X) now forming to the south. The old one looks a lot like a hurricane this morning

The main low’s doing its best hurricane impression rn (this is from a day ago, but it still has that same look today)
