Big ones for 2025

#1 Postby AnnularCane » Wed Jan 01, 2025 2:45 pm

New year, new name list! Who do you think will be the big ones this year?

I'm going with Imelda (not just for the I factor, but she really does sound like a big one despite her 2019 version). Honorable mentions to Lorenzo and Olga.

(I tried to paste in the name list but it wouldn't let me do it.)

I really don't think there will be a Beryl-like storm this year, but I have a feeling we won't see a completely dead early season, so in terms of big ones, I think A-E will be off the hook. It's been a while since we had a strong, destructive G storm, so I think Gabrielle might be a one to watch for August/September (and, perhaps 2025 may continue 2024's pattern of getting original, as opposed to replacement names, retired). We might see a late season monster, so I think any storm between L-O may also be one to watch.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

Based solely and completely unscientifically on the fact that the big ones in 2024 were primarily "older" names (Beryl, Milton, Helene), I'll say that Fernand, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, and Olga will be notable storms this year.

In all reality though hopefully and probably not though, the I-J-K storms all wreaking havoc back-to-back-to-back would be unlikely and make for a devastating year.

Helene 1988 and Gabrielle 1989 were OTS Category 4 and since Helene was a land falling Cat 4 in 2024, I'm gonna say Gabrielle will also be a land falling Cat 4

Also Melissa to keep with the newer "powerful M storm"

In my opinion, the ones to look out for are Fernand, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry (all 4 of them being potential majors), Lorenzo (I am predicting it being C5 again), Melissa (to possibly continue the newer powerful M-named storm tradition), and Pablo (just predicting a name further down to be a potential big name this year as well).

And possibly Karen as well (for the memes). If Karen does become a major, I could see a tsunami of Karen memes flooding Twitter (yes, I still call it that). There could also be some Tom & Jerry memes as well if Jerry becomes a major as well.

what happened to Humberto? This one (along with Melissa) are sticking out to me more than most of the others.

I think this year will be a bit more spammy in terms of named storms since the seasonal models are showing warm subtropics, so I’ll go with Imelda, Melissa, and Olga (maybe Wendy as well if we get a less-active WAM and no dry air incursions from the mid latitudes).
