Like December 2022 as the front comes through should be classic blue norther. Oklahoma-Panhandle first Monday and NTX-CTX Tuesday, overnight event for SE Texas. Some may start out 50s/60s then teens and near 20 by evening with that howling wind. Hot cocoa.

Txdot thinks there’s a winter weather advisory in dfw today, not sure what they have been looking at because it’s not supposed to get below freezing tonight but all the dynamic message boards on 35w say winter weather advisory today.

Looks like his standard is about -30F departure from those lows in the article for when it most stresses the grid.

Funny about 1899 we have no records still standing. 1905 appears to be the one to beat other than 2021 for February here. Second coldest temperature ever by one degree(January 1930 is the coldest)

2021 fell 3 degrees short

-16 January 22 1930
-15 February 13 1905
-14 January 18 1930
-13 February 16 2021

Also January 1918 has the record for the coldest high ever here at 2 degrees(it was 5 in 2021)

But 1899 sounds like a colder version of what we saw in January. Snow in Tampa

I think if 2021 happened before DFW turned into an 8MM person metroplex, 1899 would have been broken. -2 at DFW was no mean feat.

From HGX on "potential" wintery precipitation

The increase in temperatures will be short-lived, however, as a
vigorous arctic low pressure system digs its way south over the
Great Lakes states and brings a strong arctic cold front through our
area early Wednesday. Showers and a few embedded thunderstorms will
accompany this frontal passage. There will be a brief period
Wednesday morning where a wintry mix of precipitation will be
possible across our far northwestern counties as temperatures
quickly drop to around the freezing mark in phase with the
accompanying precipitation activity, and this possibility is
something that we will continue to monitor closely over the next
couple of days as this forecast continues to evolve.

Frigid temperatures will rush in behind this front on Wednesday,
riding strong, gusty northerly winds that will last through the day
and overnight into Thursday morning. This arctic air combined with
the continued gusty northerly winds will drop temperatures down to
the mid-upper 20s across the coast and the mid-upper teens across
our northern zones. Factoring in the winds will bring wind chill
values down to the teens from the Houston Metro southward, and to
the single digits across our northern counties. If this verifies,
Extreme Cold Warnings/Hard Freeze Warnings may be needed for
Thursday morning.

Ntxw, this question is for you. What happened in 1899 for it to get so cold and would it even be possible to do that again given how everything has warmed up in the past several years?

I'll have to pull up some old charts saved somewhere but it was 19th century version of Dec 1983. Similar big HP, similar location but it seems snow was more prevalent in the southern and eastern US than 1983. These two events are notorious for how expansive the cold was, much wider than anything in modern times. There are cold shots colder in certain places but nowhere near the coverage.

Yeah I've read stories about Lake Ponchartrain being frozen over for Mardi Gras in 1899 so it was clearly longer duration than January when everything was melting the next day down there

It's also interesting to me that mid February has had several big arctic blasts in history it's not early February or late February it's the week or so around and after Valentine's Day and well here we are again maybe. That's probably why 1899 doesn't stick out anymore here 1905 was worse but very short lived apparenty

I don't know if that's for the entire state or just certain parts, but we definitely could be touching some of that easily in the northern half of the state this coming week it seems.

I'm just having a hard time believing with what the models are showing that the best snow would be north of me i mean personally I'm good with the winter and won't be upset anymore no matter what but with the way the models look I would think the wintry precip would spread a lot more to the south unless I'm missing something. We all know the globals usually struggle with these setups and I mean we may struggle to get to 10 degrees Wednesday which is up there with the all time cold here. Cold air isn't gonna be the problem

If anything if it's really that cold I'd be thinking it'd be south of me. It's always a concern here during big time arctic cold. I mean we were dang lucky in January on the NW edge of the storm. Nobody thought that was our storm

Steep height rises and temperature gradient will be impressive in southern Kansas, northern Oklahoma, and SW Missouri. This region pretty much should see blizzard conditions 30-50mph with the front and snow initially. Not sure if the time requirement is enough sustained but it could look like what you experienced down here on Valentines day Feb 2021.
