Ruse by police yields 30 arrests

The letter promising free money sounded too good to be true -- and it was.

Thirty people with unpaid traffic fines were arrested Saturday after they arrived at a designated location expecting to cash in on a class-action lawsuit.

Police had duped them with letters from the "Texas Division of Utilities" saying that they were owed money and that to claim it, they had to appear in person at a the former Texas Motors Ford building on Cherry Lane in Fort Worth.

Why arrest them just for an unpaid traffic fine? :-?

Hmm sounds a bit illegal to dupe them like that, but I don't really know.

Why not just pay the traffic fine to avoid possible arrest? :-?

This stunt was pulled here a few years back. Only difference is they were offered free Color TV's. My brother was out on the rig so I went to pick it up for him. Imagine the surprise I found. hehe. He had not paid a speeding ticket. The police got a kick out of my response. lol.

What people fail to realize is that when you break the law, expect a ticket. Unpaid fines result in the city losing money. If you feel you received a ticket unfairly, take it to court or pay the fine. The choice is yours. And yes, my brother got the "what for's" from me.

It is illegal in some states. It is called entrappment. Since then, the police dept. here has hired a collection agency to collect their fines.
