The legacy left by Pope Francis on caring for the Earth

#1 Postby Hurricane2022 » Tue Apr 22, 2025 7:05 pm

In my opinion...one of the most striking aspects of Pope Francis’ pontificate was the way he took environmental issues seriously and courageously. While many leaders still downplay the effects of climate change, he did not hesitate to tell the truth: We are destroying our Common Home, and this has profound consequences, especially for the poorest...!!!

The encyclical Laudato Si', published in 2015, is a watershed...It goes far beyond the traditional discourse on the environment. Francis proposes an “integral ecology,” where everything is interconnected: the environment, the economy, culture, social life...and even spirituality. He shows that the ecological crisis is also an ethical and existential crisis!!

One point that really caught my attention while reading the encyclical is how the Pope denounces the current development model, based on unlimited exploitation and irresponsible consumption. He claims that the logic of waste — which affects both people and natural resources — is unsustainable...and he is right!! We live in a system that turns everything into a commodity and turns a blind eye to the impacts of this...

Francis also always emphasized that climate change disproportionately affects the poorest...They are the ones who suffer from water shortages, extreme weather events, and the loss of land and biodiversity. It is a wake-up call and, at the same time, a call for global solidarity :D

Another strong passage in the encyclical is when he spoke about the need for an ecological conversion...It is not enough to wait for actions from governments or large companies: Each of us has a role to play: From the way we consume to the way we treat others and nature, everything counts. He invited us to cultivate a new relationship with the planet, based on care, gratitude, and responsibility.

So for me, Francis legacy is clear: either we change our mindset and our actions now, or we will quickly put the future of life on Earth at risk!!! The Holy Father has managed to give a voice to the planet, to the poor, and to future generations. He inspires me to see ecology as a matter of justice and faith. Caring for The Creation is not an extra; it is essential...and it is urgent!!!
