Re: Texas Summer 2025
As others mentioned active weather yesterday afternoon across the SC TX region with areas across the southern Hill Country picking up 2-3 inches of rain while amounts were more scattered across San Antonio but overall not bad considering the time of year.
Might see one more round on Monday before things begin to quiet down again and the heat/dry pattern settles back in.

Re: Texas Summer 2025
Picked up another inch of rain this morning from a MCS. Brings my total to 2 inches since Friday. With up to 4 inches on the north side of WF, very nice totals especially for August.

It's going to be a close call, but could see fairly good coverage of convection erupt over DFW within the next hour

Honestly thought this round would fizzle out before approaching DFW. Glad it was my wife's car I washed this morning. Hehe.

A somewhat organized line has formed and it is now warned.

Darn, blew up just past me lol
At least we have something to watch in August.
Looks like it kicked off an outflow.

Round 2 coming through now. It was warned going through Denton County, but has since been dropped. Still, pretty strong winds, frequent lighting and intense rainfall with it.

A 90 mph wind gust at DFW according to the observation record? That doesn’t sound right. Apparently recorded at 4:40 am.

Mid morning squall line into the Houston area. Street flooding on the streets prone to flood.

It's on the SPC storm report page for now, but with asterisk (still under review).
Nearby Arlington had 2 reported gusts of around 60 MPH, which seems more reasonable.

I just took a short walk around my apartment in North Dallas and the summer sound of cicadas was noticeably absent. Is that normal for early August?

It’s actually not unusual. After intense storms—especially ones with heavy rain, strong winds, or sudden temperature drops—cicadas can go quiet for a bit. Here’s why:
Storm Stress Response
Cicadas are sensitive to environmental changes. A powerful storm can:
- Knock them out of trees or damage their habitat
- Temporarily lower soil and air temperatures, which affects their activity
- Disrupt their mating calls, which are tied to warm, sunny conditions
Recovery Period
Most cicadas, especially the annual “dog-day” types common in August, will resume their buzzing once conditions stabilize. They thrive in hot, dry weather—so if today’s cooler or overcast, they might still be laying low.
Local Impact
If the storm caused significant tree damage or flooding, it could reduce cicada numbers in your immediate area. They rely on trees for both shelter and reproduction, so broken branches or saturated soil can throw off their rhythm.
If tomorrow’s forecast is sunny and warm again, you might hear that familiar chorus ramping back up. Want to dig into how cicadas sync their emergence with soil temperature or explore how different broods behave? I’ve got some fascinating entomology up my sleeve.

Re: Texas Summer 2025
89 mph at DFW is confirmed apparently. It beat the wind on the day of the infamous plane crash in 1985 which the 40th anniversary was just on Saturday
Must have been a very localized microburst

The next 10 days look to remain seasonal or just above. Not too bad. The averages start to drop in about 10 days.

Very lucky it happened when it did. I think flights start leaving DFW at 5 am, but there are a few redeyes that arrive a little earlier.

Early August is peak summer. Equivalent to early Feb for winter. Get by this with 90s to 100 and consider it a win. Tame summer so far here, counting down till Fall. September is just around the corner..college football and NFL!

Speaking of which… where’s the Fall thread? Or does it start Sep. 1st?

Don't use my posts as forecast; I'm not a licensed meteorologist! I just endorse cold weather, alright?
All observations I note are for Temple, Texas unless otherwise stated.

Re: Texas Summer 2025
Pacific SSTA has increased over the summer season off the west coast. Ridging there has been favored and played a role in preventing a scorching summer. It will set shop again in the medium term. Will this continue into the Fall and Winter? Predominantly has connections to a -EPO with such a set up.
