Our two Cavapoos hate wet grass but apparently they don’t mind the ice. They loved it, ran around zoomying and playing in it. How odd.

Currently 31 at my place near Canyon Lake. Impressive to watch temps continue to fall during the daylight.
This is a potent airmass. I think we’ll have enough moisture return this afternoon/evening to cause some real issues. Some local mets down here are downplaying it already- looking at you KENS5- and I think that’s a mistake.

Why drive if you don’t have to? Freezing drizzle sucks to drive in because the roads are fine until the moment they aren’t. Then we get videos like the one in fort worth before the main event in 2021
TBF he’s got a jeep.

Extreme cold warning extended until Tuesday. Doubt we have school then if tonight produces.

TBF 4 wheel drive doesn't help much on ice. Snow, absolutely, ice, not so much.

I have been watching the freeze line encroaching on Williamson and Travis County. The upper 20s are in here. Marching east and south. The sleet from earlier is frozen on my SUV and trash cans. Anyone get a pressure on the strength of the airmass so far?

Houston area schools, including districts like Baytown and Pasadena, cancelled school Friday afternoon. I'm on a three day weekend (need to contact parents of failing students and lesson plan, but that is every weekend) I'd be surprised if their are any DFW area schools not cancelled already. If we're talking about extending that up there through Tuesday that probably happens Sunday if there a good snow/sleet pack.
If we get no ice at all down Houston way, which looks less likely as the event approaches (I'm thinking at least a tenth) it is still good we don't have school. In Minnesota or Chicago or Boston they'd laugh, but lows near 20F/windchills in the teens is dangerous for students at bus stops.

For DFW schools closed on Tuesday will probably be a given. Upper 20s for highs Monday. If we get a lot more tonight I doubt it will melt until late Tuesday if that before a cold front arrives. It just comes down to is it safe to run the buses. The eyeball test looking out your window if you see white on the road probably doesn't pass for openings.

This cold is legit.
Could potentially set record lows three days in a row at DFW.

Re: Texas Winter 2025-2026
Local Austin met:
10:30 AM - Precipitation remains very light right now as expected. I'm more interested in the temperature trend while we wait for more widespread winter weather this afternoon.
Folks, this storm is already happening. The cold air is already here, and our data continues to VASTLY underrepresent how potent it is. The leading edge of the colder Arctic air is now just to the northwest of Austin, and temperatures behind it are in dropping into the teens and low 20s!
Bad news: This means Austin will start gathering ice (light accumulation initially) within the next 1-2 hours. Other areas to the east/southeast will see that transition by mid to late afternoon.
Good news: Colder temperatures = better chance that we see more SLEET than freezing rain which would reduce our risk of power outages tonight.
Still a lot of twists and turns in this forecast. Please stay tuned!

Ugh, why couldn't it be 8:00 pm or 8:00 am? I'll be sleeping on the couch and getting up every 30 minutes to check on the transition

Sleep when you're dead. We are never promised a next time (last year burns!)
