NWS Pittsburgh starting to hit harder on storm

#1 Postby tomboudreau » Wed Dec 03, 2003 3:43 pm

Hi there. Just read the afternoon forecast discussion from NWS Pittsburgh and its starting to look like a real mess coming into the area. I havent had time really to look at the State College discussion. But this is what Pittsburgh is saying now. They mentioned Winter Storm Watch possibly going up at the midnight shift. For the most part, they have been down playing this event and not saying much is going to happen. But now they are saying significant snows are possible. Anyway, here is the discussion.
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PITTSBURGH PA
228 PM EST WED DEC 3 2003

RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE TONIGHT WILL PROVIDE DRY WEATHER BUT CHILLY TEMPS
INTO THURSDAY AM. PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN IN THE WARM ADVECTION IN
THE SOUTHERN ZONES THURSDAY AFTERNOON AS A POSSIBLE MIX OF SNOW AND
RAIN AND PUSH AS SNOW IN THE NORTHERN ZONE BY LATE IN THE AFTERNOON.
WITH VERY COLD GROUND TEMPS RAIN IN THE MTNS OF WV AND MD MAY FALL
FIRST AS SNOW THEN A MIX OF FREEZING RAIN AND SNOW THURSDAY NIGHT
INTO EARLY FRIDAY AM.

AS THE MAIN STORM CENTER FORMS AND MOVES SOUTH OF THE DISTRICT ON
FRIDAY THE MIXED PRECIP WILL CHANGE TO ALL SNOW WITH SIGNIFICANT
SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY.
WINTER STORM WATCH MAY BE ISSUED FOR FRIDAY NIGHT BY THE MIDNIGHT
SHIFT TONIGHT BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THIS EVENINGS MODEL RUN.

SNOW WILL TAPER TO FLURRIES ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON BEFORE ENDING.
CLEARING SHOULD OCCUR BY SUNDAY WITH A DRY END TO THE WEEKEND.

Going to see what midnight shift says and if I will still continue on the plans for working on Saturday. Stay tuned folks, this is getting interesting. As a side note...I don't think we have gotten above 30 degrees today. I know our low last night was in the mid teens...around 15 or so degrees. The cold air is in place!

Pittsburgh had been saying nothing much was going to come of this until this discussion and State College had been saying this was going to be a decent size storm. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens later tonight and tomorrow.
