Thanks for the update, Derek. What a long, strange Atlantic tropics season this has been. And you rarely see a tropical depression or tropical storm in the Atlantic at the same time as an east coast snowstorm. But that could very well be the case in 2 days! :eek:

Based on sat imagery, this looks to be a strong tropical storm at the present time and it may be foolish to rule out hurricane intensity

I think the plane will find 45-50 kt flight level winds this afternoon, making this a minimal tropical storm with 35-40 kt surface winds. There is no evidence that this is a strong tropical storm (wind over 50 kts) at this time.

I'm thinking in the 45-50KT rane at the surface based upon the tightness of the center at this time. However, latest sat images are hinting at some westerly shear over the system, so this intensification trend may be leveled off somewhat
