I can remember Jan 21, 1985 very very well. Me and my friend Greg Crowder were both severe weather weenies in high school. We were always walking around in very hot or cold weather. Well, that morning it was -14 degrees outside and we just had to experience it.

doesn't do it justice. It was so cold that my face was so numb, and my hands were hurting so bad. It was fourteen below zero Fahrenheit, with a frigid 15 to 20 mph wind straight out of the North Pole.
We barely made it back home.
Aep, you can have your Arctic weather, but please send me my 36 inches of snow!!!!

In 1989, the thermometer on our back porch once got down to -6 degrees. The record reads -2 for our area, but it was -6 at my house and -10 at my grandfather's place in West Fort Worth.
I was 12 at the time, and remember running outside with just my shorts, a tshirt, and barefoot to get the paper for my dad. No wind, so it wasn't that bad.
But that booger thing --- that happened to me when I breathed that unusually cold (for Texas) air.

Temp is dropping very quickly this evening. Current temperature is already down to -19F. Just went to plug in our truck otherwise I won't be going anywhere tomorrow. I barely started our truck this evening because it was sitting all day and not plugged in. Block heaters are a must when its this cold.

aep - I know wher you are comin' from currently it is 1* here, pretty mild, but getting colder. I remember having temps down to -80* with the wind Chill, the coldest I have endured without wind chill is about -50*
I once spent a weekend living in a tent when the temps were -40*. Of course it was winter survival training during my term in the Army reserves, and of course the stoves were not working so nobody got much sleep.
Normally in January and February we can expect temps in the -30* to -40* range for a couple of weeks.
