A winter storm watch is now in effect for the Quad Cities and Milwaukee for Sunday. Even though it feels like spring temperature wise, the forecast reveals a significant winter storm potential as temperature plunge below freezing Saturday night. Chicago is not included in a winter storm watch yet, but could in later updates as more certainity comes into play.
An area of low pressure is expected to develop just south of the winter storm watch area Saturday night and intensify as it tracks east towards the Ohio Valley late Sunday into early Monday.
A winter storm watch means there is a potential of more than 6 inches of snow within the watch area. While this is a potential threat, this winter storm is not considered an immient threat. Thus a winter storm watch. If the threat becomes more immient, then a winter storm warning will likely be issued most likely on Saturday.
In addition to the threat of heavy snow, winds will pick up throughout the day Sunday with some gusts exceeding 30 mph. This will result in areas of blowing and drifting snow in addition to the heavy snowfall.
Stay tuned for further updates throughout the evening. Happy new year folks!
