I have a question...could this be averted by a controlled detonation in a strategic area, thus relieving pressure...or (looking at it from a terrorist standpoint) could a supereruption be artificially induced by similar means?

Pardon my bluntness, but "thinking about the unthinkable" IS my stock-in-trade.

Wasn't something like that in the movie .."The Core"?? They were trying to get the earths core spinning by a detonating several warheads at different locations... At any rate if this does occur ..it's fate. Glad I am peace with the Lord I honestly don't think terrorists could pull off anything close to this

Indeed this is serious, people are wiggin' out, freakin' out over ALL the *terrorists threats*, when right under our feet is a "REAL, HONEST to GOODNESS" threat that could send the Northern Hemisphere into a Nuclear winter (and of course the terrorists I'm SURE, will take credit for this or SOMEONE will give them the credit!) If you take a look at the USGS site and track all the recent earthquakes, you can see a pattern setting up that could lead to this thing blowing it's top and taking every living thing within a 600 mile radius along with it
