it most likely was related to Conditional Symmetric Instability. it occurs when the absolute vorticity of the geostrophic flow becomes weak positive or slightly negative (the slope of the theta-e surfaces is greater than the Mg surfaces...making the atmosphere inertially unstable...which is best analyzed by areas of negative EPV).... the release of CSI (responsible for the thundersnow) is the feature which restores the atmosphere to equilibrium.

judging by the look of the NEXRAD out of topeka...most of the CSI bands appear to be located further back to the northwest of a line from great bend to st. joseph. which also looks like roughly where the mixed precip/snow line is right now.

fairly intense convection appears to be building close to topeka...which is more likely related to CI (convective instability) as compared to CSI.

David:

You beat me to it!!! I've had thunder with sleet here in Lawrence as well-though I've been dry slotted a bit we are having sleet with freezing rain-it looks like it is trying to fill in more now around here-I haven't had thunder sleet/snow since the October surprise of 1996 in Kansas City where we had 8 inches of snow 2 weeks before Haloween. What a deal!! looks like we have a pretty ggod swath of precip heading our way-there is snow all the way back to Goodland (it is moving more North than east though) have a great night-I have a 9 month old with an ear infection who will be waking up soon and a 4 year old that is going to want to play in the sleet/snow/ice all day tomm. I need some sleep!! I hope this holds together through the night!!

Well... in all I saw 4 lightning flashes, and heard 11 rumbles of thunder, 3 of those being pretty good boomers too. I'd take this... but I want it closer to when we have school so we can have a snow day.... and we need more too... it stopped :(.
