Although I LOVE beef, it does play havoc with my digestion, and in my case potentiates occasional onsets of uric acid crystals (gout).

Therefore, the vast majority of my meat is between chicken and fish, with some pork/ham occasionally, and rarely (maybe once a month) beef in stew, or hamburgers.

Add that I can only stomach one meal a day, and that in the evening...well, you get the idea.

Well, I never worked in a slaughter house, my father did and some of the stories HE tells. As y'all are well aware of, I was a meat cutter for 20 years, I loved the job and you'd think after 12 hours a day, 6 days a week of smelling, cutting meat, I'd be sick of it. Beef IMHO is a SAFE meat, pork on the other hand, I CANNOT stomach pork, especially after cutting hundreds of thousands of pounds of it over a 20 year period, if the general public only knew what pork does to a person "BLEEECH!"

I still hunt, not as much as I use to however, don't think I'd ever hunt a elk, deer or antelope anymore, I only hunt quail, dove, ducks etc. I won't go into FULL details here, but my last deer hunt, I shot a 4 point White Tail buck, the first shot didn't kill him, I had to shot him in the *edit*.....before I made the final shot, the deer was "cryin' like a baby" seriously, he sounded like a hurt baby, needless to say, I gave the meat away to a neighbor and haven't touched venison since!

Bill - well you said pretty much why turkey and chicken agrees with me. In a round about way. A few hours ago, I had to drive over to my mom's apartment and thought long and hard if I should go vegetarian or not. As I pointed out, my daughter is and she gets her protein from beans, rice and tofu. Peanut butter is out (allergy). I tried tofu - ewww! The texture is what gets me, it doesn't even taste like food! I guess you could grow to like it. Now that said, Bill uh hum you must know what beans - and she eats a lot of beans! - would do to me too. So I've finally decided my colon health has to take priority, so I will continue to eat turkey/chicken/fish but a moderate amount. And I can still be an animal rights supporter and an animal lover. Can't turn that off now!

I think that PETA members should go spray paint lions and tigers and bears as a protest against eating meat. I wonder how it feels to get eaten alive. Nature has no remorse. Neither should we.

That reminds me of that song by the Monkees:

I thought meat was only for barbarians.
Meant for someone else but not for me
hunger was out to get to me
That's the way it seemed
Tofu and salad haunted all my dreams

{Refrain}

Then I saw the steak
Now I'm a meat eater
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a meat eater I couldn't leave it if I tried

I thought food should not be a livin' thing
Seemed the more I ate the less I got
What's the use in tryin'
All you get is gas
When I needed burgers I got grain

{Refrain}

<Instrumental interlude>

Ah, love was out to get to me
Now, that's the way it seemed
Tofu and salad haunted all my dreams

{Refrain}

Yes, I saw the steak
Now I'm a meat eater
There's not a tra-a-a-ace
Of doubt in my mind
Well, I'm a meat eater
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah ah-uh-uh

FADE

Well, I'm a meat eater

My mom and much of my family have never ate meat. They are fine and happy, so i guess ignorance is bliss for them.

I on the other hand eat everything, but i only eat beef sparingly. Every once and a while is not bad i think.

Miss Mary,

I learned this from a former missionary who worked in Central America; if you eat equal portions of beans* and corn, it produces a rudimentary protein that will satisfy MDAR (Minimum Daily Adult Requirements), while sparing you from the problems associated with beef consumption. Meat of any kind was sparse in the jungle, so this comes from an unimpeachable first-hand source.

Add a fresh salad or greens, and some hard-grating cheese (easily carried around w/o refrigeration), and there you have it...full nutrition without bulk. :wink:

*"beans" as in "frijoles", whatever type they consist of...ss.

If I don't eat beef at LEAST 3 times a week, my body tells me. I was on the Atkins diet for 6 weeks and dropped 32 pounds!! BUT.....talk about CARB withdrawl, I "love" my pasta, taters and rice, especially the RICE......I could eat rice 7 days a week, spanish, mexican, plain, sushi, brown, you name it, it HAS to be rice!

My wife and I have not eaten much beef since we heard about the mad cow case in Washington. I don't think I could remove beef from my diet entirely (unless a doctor told me to do so or else). Gotta have steak once in a while! :)

I have always been a beef eater. I have had a couple of steaks since the BSE diagnosis in Washington and just didn't even really think about it. I read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair and I still eat sausage. I had a pet rabbit, so there's no way I could eat bunny meat.

I just feel sorry for all those sweet little carrots who get plucked out of their cozy soil beds so we can chop 'em up and eat 'em!! :)

It's all part of evolution. The bigger and or smarter animals eat the smaller and or less intelligent animals. We wouldn't be here today if people wouldn't have eaten animals to survive. If everyone had your ideas, then our economy would suffer, not to mention we would have a huge overpopulation of many animals. The deer would probably be running the White House by now. You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I completely disagree with your reasoning. If you are ever faced up against a hungry shark, make sure to tell it that it shouldn't eat you because you are a living organism.

I made hamburgers the other night, and before eating the thought of Mad Cow crossed my mind, but then I went ahead and took a bite. And it was worth it, because they were really good.

As far as vegetarians who don't eat meat* because of animal rights, while I suppose I must respect their choice, I don't think very highly of it. It's one of those pointless battles, like fighting against language "decay", that is really a waste of time and doesn't fix anything (assuming, of course, that there was a problem in the first place).

*I apologize for this construction ("vegetarians who don't eat meat" - as if there were any other kind!), but it was the best I could do given what I was trying to say.

You were clear. :) You said "vegetarians who don't eat meat because of animal rights" as opposed to vegetarians who don't eat meat for health reasons only. :)
