Tropical storm Odette report

#1 Postby cycloneye » Mon Jan 05, 2004 3:36 pm

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2003odette.shtml?

It caused 8 deaths in the Dominican Republic and massive floodings there and the question here is if this name will be retired and if you ask me after causing those deaths yes.

8 people dying from a tropical system is 8 too many if you ask me but haven't many more died and the name doesn't retire?? I guess I am asking what criteria is used to retire systems. Is it based on fatalities and how many or the extent of damage... Thanks :)

Here is the explanation Johnnathan about when they decide to retire a name.Odette is in the borderline of the criteria because it caused 8 deaths but the damage was not nationwide or extensive as it was a tropical storm with 55 mph winds when it made landfall.

Not a chance. 8 deaths is statistically insignificant, especially after Gordon killed more than 1,000 and yet was not retired (also Bret killed 173 in 1993 and made landfall as a cat 3 in 99, still the name continues)
