Northwestern Snowstorm?

Anyone else fascinated by this northwestern winter storm? I think these storms are just awesome to watch. I was looking at Mike Siedel on TWC on the hr and he was in Troutdale, Oregon *suburb of portland*. If you could believe places in the northwest like seattle and portland used to average much higher amts of snow (at least a foot or more a year). In the past 30 years they only average about 5" a year!

I find it fascinating that arctic air pours into Portland via the Columbia River Gorge and that flow of arctic air is what made this Northwest blizzard possible. However the winds are going to turn westerly and all that snow will change to rain and sfc temps in the high 40s

I live in Seattle and we DID have a snowstorm yesterday and freezing rain most of last night. Temps have just moved up to 40 and the melt is well underway. Portland is a mess due to the Columbia River gorge bringing frigid arctic air into the city but they are slowly warming up.

I have lived here almost all of my life and you are correct about the snowfall. In 1968 we had a foot in December on the 30-31st. 10 days later in January the arctic air moved back in and STAYED until the end of the month. Seattle(airport) recorded 47 inches of snow in 3 1/2 weeks. So it can snow a lot here. Am hoping the long range models are correct showing a trend back to colder weather but I am not holding my breath. It has been fun and very beautiful.

If it turns back to a winterier (not a word) pattern i would def consider visiting up there sometime in the future. That part of the country is just so beautiful w/o the snow, it must be drop dead gorgeous in the winter!

It's important that Portland gets that arctic air scoured out soon because at the temps they are dealing with on the SFC, that FRZ RA is just piling up the ice. Ice is hell to drive on and let me tell you I know from personal experience when I was much younger, trying to walk on ice is no joke. Years ago I thought ice was funny. I saw someone take a pratfall and to my young dumb perception at that time, it appeared comedic. Let me assure you ice is no walk in the park. I slipped and took a pratfall of my own.

I was not laughing. I bruised my coccyx (sp) bone you know, the bone at the base of my spine. I was not laughing. I did not take another jebwalk for 3 weeks.

I was just a dumb kid. I had seen Michael Jackson's moonwalk on one of his electrifying videos on MTV and I got this really dumb idea: Hey there's ice and I am gonna be just like Mike (Michael Jackson).

Well after that stunt, I was lame in more ways than one lol.

I try NOT to walk after ICE STORMS. A puddle of water that's turned to ice is ONE THING; the ground after a MAJOR ICE STORM is another.

Haha great story jeb! Yeh they definitly need to get out of the icy weather, but i don't think they'd mind the snow too much. Last year raleigh had a big icestorm and much of the state and city was out of power for as much as a week or two!
