ORLANDO, Fla. (Court TV) — Freedom was fleeting for Ronald A. Mahner.
Mahner, 34, was released from Seminole County jail Dec. 11 after serving a sentence for auto theft, driving under the influence, and habitually driving with a suspended or revoked license.
Apparently, it did not take long for Mahner to revert back to his old habits. Four days after his release, his was back in jail.
Mahner's new legal problems began when he arrived at the Seminole County Sheriff's office to pick up his personal belongings. His clothing, shampoo, dart board and battery charger were being held while he was in jail, according to the sheriff's department.
As proof of identification, Mahner showed his driver's license, which after a routine check was found to have been revoked for life. Strike one.
The deputy could not prove that Mahner was doing anything illegal with the suspended license unless he was actually seen behind the wheel. So Deputy Teri Cresswell instructed Mahner to drive his car around to the back parking lot of the sheriff's office. He reportedly parked in a no parking fire lane. Strike two.
Finally, while Mahner was parked, another sheriff's department employee ran a check on the car license plate number. The car had been reported stolen four days earlier, the very day Mahner was released from prison. Strike three.
As he was getting ready to drive off with his personal effects, Mahner was arrested and charged once again with auto theft and driving with a suspended license. He will be arraigned on Jan. 20 in Seminole County court.
