Congested ear

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Mon Jan 05, 2004 1:34 pm

I swear, if it's not one symptom I have to contend with, it's another. I already tackled the sore throat, earache, body aches and pains, fever, and runny nose. For a while, my head was all stopped up even though my nose was clear. I've been hoarse since most of this started. Now, I've got a persistent, productive cough and the most annoying thing -- a congested ear. The cough I can deal with -- dextromathorphin settles it. But my ear is driving me up a wall! It doesn't hurt at all, but I just can't hear in it. It's the same sensation as when you have water in your ear after swimming and you have to shake your head or jump on one foot to get it out. Only this isn't water. It's been like this now for almost a week and I thought it would go away after I took some decongestants. Nope. Since then, I've tried peroxide. Did nothing. Rubbing alcohol (suggested by one nurse). Nothing. Rubbing alcohol and vinegar (suggested by another nurse). Nothing. The same nurse who suggested the alcohol/vinegar flush also suggested Benadryl. I went out at lunch and bought some. Just took one and I'm hoping I don't get drowsy here at work. When I go home tonight, I'll take two before bed and see if that does it.

In the meantime, anyone else have any suggestions before I decide to fork over $25 for an office visit with my primary care doc?

Thanks!

Duck - try sweet oil and it the conditions last more then two days go to the doctor...I didn't about two years ago - it went into my inner ear and gave me vertigo - that was some scarey stuff to have your equilibruim all out of wack.

Hubby said he tried something at Walgreens - starts with Sim... - he said that works good too.

Hope you get better soon....between all the ailments out there - mine is the stomach virus - I went 10 weeks without getting sick since the last time...now I got a headache from hell and feel crappy. Hope its not the flu.

Thanks, Ticka. I'll check it out!

I hope you don't have the flu either. Take care of yourself and get better soon. :)

Last fall I had a congested ear. That is the MOST annoying feeling. I thought I damaged my hearing or something.

If this has already happened more than once, don't wait for that trip to the doctor.

It could be otitis media occulta, which will require antibiotics, antihistamines and possibly a tube in your eardrum to "vent" and relieve the buildup of pus/infection.

Also..if you haven't had your tonsils/adenoids removed yet, you may have to do so now. NOT fun...

Been there every year since 1985...trust me.

Bill and Johnathan -- did it hurt for you guys? Mine ear doesn't. It's just annoying.

As for tonsils and adenoid glands, I still have mine. Don't most people get them taken out when they're young, if they need to get them out? I didn't have chicken pox until I was 16. Had my wisdom teeth removed at age 25. I suppose it would be right on schedule for me to get tonsils out late in life.

AFLAC, the pressure got so bad that my eardrum burst open, discharging blood and pus all over the place...not just once, but several times over the past few years. And, yes, it hurts...a LOT. Back in '89, I had to have a BULGING eardrum lanced...NO fun, AFLAC.

My inner-ear problem didn't surface until I was in my early 30's...all the more reason to see that otolaryngologist (ear-nose-throat specialist) SOON. :larrow:

I had my tonsil and adenoids out when I was sick. It was during a time when they didn't hesitate to take those suckers out and I'm sure that I'm better for it.

It sounds like you've gone alittle too long with that ear problem. i'd try that remedy that Ticka gave you but if it doesn't help within 24 hours, I'd get the checkbook out.

I hope you feel better soon!

Just got back from an appointment with my MD. It seems that I have been affected by an extreme case of allergies. My external ears are now wax-free, thanks to all the remedies I've been trying over the past several days (Similasan included :) ). But the fluid is in my inner ear, where I can't get to it. She gave me a prescription for Allegra and hopefully that will clear it up in the next couple of days.

:)

I still have my tonsils and adenoids.

The only ear trouble I have ever had was when I cranked up my booming car stereo one too many times. Everything sounded like it was vibrating and my ear was ringing. Went to the doc and he gave me some ear drops and antibiotics which cured it. I have since sold the car with the loud stereo system.

Well, at least you got it checked out and it wasn't anything really serious!

You had temporary hearing loss Linda. I unfortunately have permanent hearing damage from years of DJ'ing. When all is quiet and I lay still in bed..the ringing is always there.

Now my wife says I have "selective hearing loss"...but that's a different story

I had that problem too. They gave me some spray for the sinus. The fluid in my ear cleared up after a bit. Glad it's getting better shawn :)

I remember back in Elementary School, I had a congested ear, my mom used a very small amount of hydrogen peroxide for my ear, and it sometimes worked.

Yes j thank goodness it was temporary. My bro-in-law has permanent hearing damage from driving his 18 wheeler. He has to wear a hearing aid.

If all these kids driving around with those stereos blaring only knew what they are doing to their ears they would rethink turning them up. Most of them that run around with them blaring is to show off not because they like the music. Had I not experienced it I would probably be blasting away still. lol.
