Snow Streaks Across the Midwest Into the East Today

A fast-moving storm system will swing south and eastward across the Midwest Thursday into the mid-Atlantic and the Southeast Thursday night, bringing with it a streak of snow and ice. Snow showers across southeastern South Dakota, northern and eastern Iowa, northern and eastern Illinois Thursday will accumulate 1-3 inches. Snow will spread across Indiana, southern Ohio, northern and eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia Thursday and across southern Virginia, northeastern Tennessee and western North Carolina Thursday night. The snow will accumulate 1-3 inches in general with up to 6 inches in the mountains of southern West Virginia, southwestern Virginia, northeastern Tennessee and northwestern North Carolina. Sleet and freezing rain will develop Thursday night across southeastern Tennessee, northern Georgia into northeastern Alabama and western South Carolina. Roads will become icy and hazardous Thursday night.

Some lake-effect snow will linger in New York and Pennsylvania. The snow will fall across southwestern and south-central upstate New York and across northern Pennsylvania Thursday into Thursday night. The snow will accumulate at least another 1-3 inches with up to 6 additional inches in the hills south of Buffalo.

In the West freezing rain will continue in the Columbia River Valley Thursday from Portland, Oregon, through the Gorge to Pendleton and Bend, Oregon, in the south and to Yakima, Washington, in the north. Roads will be icy, and travel will be hazardous. Periods of snow in the Cascades of Washington and Oregon Thursday and Thursday night will accumulate 3-6 inches. Roads will remain snow covered and icy. Snow showers in the Sierra Nevada, Siskiyou, Klamath and Cascades of California will accumulate 1-3 inches, making roads snow covered and icy in spots. Snow showers will also accumulate 1-3 inches across northern and eastern Washington, northeastern Oregon, northern Idaho, western Montana and northwestern Wyoming Thursday.
