2004 names that you believe will be the big one(s)

#1 Postby cycloneye » Fri Jan 09, 2004 2:41 pm

Ok here is the first poll or sample of many that will be posted here for the 2004 atlantic hurricane season.

Here are the 2004 atlantic names:

Alex
Bonnie
Charley
Danielle
Earl
Frances
Gaston
Hermine
Ivan
Jeanne
Karl
Lisa
Matthew
Nicole
Otto
Paula
Richard
Shany
Tomas
Virginie
Walter

Which of the names above you say will be the big one or ones if you say more than one in terms of being a major cane and threats someone?

I say Charley and Ivan will be the big ones this 2004 season.

FYI the most important poll about your predictions or forecasts numbers will be posted at april 1.

Alex will be another nasty Allison-like TS, but on a slightly lower scale and not for GOMers. Danielle will be major, but a fish. The EC will be threatened by Cat 1 Earl. GOMers will have to watch Frances (again) but not Hou/Galvers.

I'm going to go with Danielle and Lisa being the big ones.

Female storms lately seem to pack a bigger punch.

Central Florida will be threatened by 1 of these. {don't which 1 yet}

It's been 1995 since Central Florida was last effected by a hurricane..

Lisa will threaten the Gulf Coast somewhere between New Orleans and Pensacola

Since I correctly picked Isabel to be the most intense hurricane last season, I will try this again (to prove to all of you that I am just a lucky guesser and have no real talent  ).

I think the "big one" will be Gaston.

Bonnie is going to be the big, bad storm like Betsy was in 1965. Hmmm, what do I know! :)

Hey Bonnie :) I hope that the Bonnie one is not a threat to anyone especially in the Louisiana coast. :)

Ivan will be pretty bad, continuing the streak of severe atlantic "I" hurricanes, started in 2001 with Iris. Earl will effect land masses, but not too bad. Otto, out of season, will hit southeastern Florida as a cat. 1 hurricane.

Here's my run-down of the names:

Alex: Possibly hurricane but nothing major

Bonnie: Sorry BFez, but weak tropical storm

Charley: Similar to his cousin in 1998, though less flooding

Danielle: The first name that has me somewhat weary, and I was weary about this one back in 1998 too...hurricane here but beyond that dunno

Earl: Threatens to become a hurricane before landfall but just misses, think Barry of 2001

Frances: ICK. Not the name I fear most, but right up there. Reads of MAJOR hurricane to me anyway.

Gaston: Major hurricane that makes a near miss on the U.S.

Hermine: Hurricane but nothing major, though stronger than Alex.

Ivan: THE BIG ONE. I can see this name becoming a horrendous hurricane, even if not in '04, sometime in the future....ugh this name gives me the willies.

Jeanne: Another name that sounds like a landfalling TC....kinda like Earl.

Karl: Another major candidate, to me, for "the big one." Almost ditto to Ivan.

Lisa: Tropical storm out in the Atlantic.

Matthew: Category 2 hurricane.

And there you have it....sorry if I freaked out too much at some names, but that's my opinion, right or wrong. Who knows, maybe I'm dead wrong. Ivan and Karl are my picks, with Frances right behind.

Bonnie should not be on the list after the destruction it caused on 1998. Another brilliant retirement decision by the UN's WMO

I bet Ivan turns out to be a dud. Every year there's always *that ONE name* that sticks out, and it always turns out to be an out-to-sea TS.

I see a LOT of people thinking about "Ivan the Terrible" ... however, if I were to able to see that far into the future, I'd buy some Powerball tickets with the winning numbers.

But for the hell of it, I think that the strongest storm of the season ... might be Gaston.

I agree and disagree at the same time ... Bonnie was particularly destructive but according to the prelim report, the damage was $720 million, with 3 direct deaths, so it was fairly localized. Hurricane Juan in 1985 caused $1.5 billion in damage and also wasn't retired (bad decision) ...

Possibly politics being involved, I don't know, but considering NC was in a cycle of frequent hurricane strikes (Bertha, Fran, Bonnie, Dennis, Floyd in a 4 year period). Heck, Bertha wasn't even retired and was comparably the same the strength to Bonnie 1998. Apparently, the Hampton Roads, VA area was struck the hardest.
