Wow, schools were actually canceled for the cold up here

And the blowing snow.
This is really strange considering a few weeks ago they were in despite a foot of snow...(they did cancel for the 25+ inch snowstorm at the beginning of Dec)

As it stands, they're calling for windchills tommorrow running near -60 with a "high" temperature of near -15.
Which, currently, is the temperature outside. Windchill is -40 to -50.

I would not be surprised to see quite a few schools in the Northeast closed for cold weather over the next few days. I know back in January of 1994 we had a severe arctic outbreak that closed schools for 3 days (two of which had low temps of -14 and -10 respectively).

It must have been around 4th grade or so when they called off school here because it was too cold for the buses to start. Problem is they made the announcement way too late, so late that many kids had already left for the bus stop. For 45 minutes I waited outside at 6:38 in the morning when it was -27. The school sent the police department on the bus routes to tell kids to go back inside.

It could be some kind of state law or local law or som'n like that... that school must close at a certain temperature ... it's just not good to be out in cold like that.

Dunno.

In Fairbanks, Alaska, the schools don't ever close. The only thing is that when the temperature is below -25, they don't allow children to play outside.
Even if the temperature is -70, which it was a few years back in some of the surrounding towns.

IF IT'S BELOW -25?!?!?! ROFLMAO! My kids wouldn't be allowed out if it was under 10! Heh, but then again, I don't have kids.. and well, they're used to it ;)

Serious Questions Here:
How do you heat your home?
Do you have to do anything special with your vehicles to keep them from freezing?
At the lowest temps you have experienced, what strange phenomenon have you experienced (Ex: Roses shattering like glass)?

There was talk of school closings here, but nothing now that we don't have any advisories/warnings for wind chill. Still there will be people complaining that we are endangering the lives of children by forcing them to walk 200 meters and wait for 5 minutes in 0F and 10mph winds. IMO, put on some layers and suck it up.

I'm in an apt. Not really sure how they heat it, I guess just the usual furnace and oil. I don't have to pay for heating, luckily.
So far, the only real cold weather phenomenon that I've experienced is something called "Diamond Dust", which I've actually experienced several times. When my website starts working, I plan to get it back up tonight, I'll link some pictures of it.
Here's an explanation:
http://www.suite101.com/print_article.cfm/13646/105189

The other thing is the other day I was out for a walk while the temperature was around -15 and I actually had the condensation from my breathing freeze up all around my hood and even my glasses, lol. I've got a picture of that I'll load up later.

About cars...most people up here use something call a block heater. Basically it's something you put in your car that manually warms it up through the night and works by having an electrical cord dangle out of the front grill which you plug into an outlet...most places have these outside.
I personally don't have one and all I really use is just good antifreeze and hope my car starts ok...so far it's been fine.

I've heard about the block heater from some friends who used to live in N.D. But really, you're taking chances by using just Antifrezze aren't you? I mean -40 - Jeez that's down right....uh..I've never experienced it so I can't say for sure - COLD!!

You better have a good car with a good circulation system for it to start with such cold temps!! :o

In that kind of cold weather, I'd definately use a block heater. You have a job to make a living and you live in that part of the country and you don't have a block heater and your car fails to start and you're late to your job, well, that's just too bad.

So far I've actually had no problem starting it. Just took a quick trip down to St Francis just to see the blowing snow...started on the first try with no hesitation, despite the fact that it was -17 at the time.
