Why PittBulls get their bad name!!

People of Mid eastern decent have been know to VICIOUSLY kill.. Lets just kill them all before one of them has a chance to do anything else.. There are plenty of other "friendlier" breeds of people out there.. just be friends with one of them.

Wy do you keep mentioning scotties? I merely mentioned the fact that I was bitten by one. It didn't say it was a severe bite. But have you ever seen those little guys go into a burrowed hole after another animal?

Just heard a breaking news story on WRAL-TV5 that a 3 year-old boy was found mauled tonight by a Pitbull at a neighbor's house in Harnett County, NC.

If those want them for fighting, let them go through special training and get a special liscense, much like those needed for boxing. These animals are vicious; thus, special training is required to know how to control these monsters so that they do not harm innocent people

Ok, I know everyone's DYING to hear my opinion on the subject, so here goes.

I think the best rule of thumb for owning a pitbull or any big dog for that matter is make sure you don't have any kids living in the house with you. Yes, you can train a pit bull to be loving and gentle, but just like ANY dog, it is bound to snap if agitated. Like Helen said, the way their bodies are made, like their jaws for instance, are designed by NATURE to be violent and even deadly. That doesn't make it an inherently bad dog, but the potential is certainly there. I don't know why, but I distrust big dogs, even the tamer ones. I prefer the smaller dogs, cause even if they do get rough, it's very rarely going to result in anything more than a scratch or a minor bite.

Not a good analogy. Guns don't kill people by themselves...

There isn't any doubt that pit bulls account for the vast majority of deaths due to dog attack.

Ahhh, the old pit bull controversy.

I had a friend who had a pit mix. She was a houdini. No fence could keep her in. She bit 3 kids. The third time she was put to sleep. He waited about a year when a friend of a friend's pit had pups. He, a cousin,and another friend took one. I had always been a bit wary of the dogs, even when I was at their house all day long. One night the combination of testosterone, beer, and 2 pitbulls went bad. The guys were just playing around but they ended up getting the dogs mad at each other and incited a fight. They tried breaking up the fight and both the dogs and owners were all bleeding. Eventually all 3 pittbulls from the same mother were all put down. It was later found out the sire of all these pits was a "championship" fighter.

Last summer my kids were outside playing. I didnt know it, but two pitbulls were running around the neighborhood unleashed. My daughter was smart enough (thank God) to come inside and tell me two pitbulls were near the backyard in the alley. I ran out there as fast as I could and my son was cornered by both of them against my car. He was trying desperately to open the car door so he could find some protection. The door was locked and he was defenseless. You could just see the tension in those dog's muscles. I have never been so scared. Never. I grabbed a handful of gravel from the driveway and threw it at the dogs while running and screaming my head off at them. They ran when they were pelted with gravel (they probably thought I was nuts), but it still gives me shivers to think of what could have happened to my kids had my daughter (7 at the time) not recognized a dangerous situation.

Since then I have never trusted a pit bull. I was in Petsmart a few days ago and a guy came in with a pitbull on the leash. I wasn't the only parent who steered clear of that dog. Are all pitbulls mean? I doubt it. I think it all boils down to buying from a reputable breeder or buying one for $15 from a friend of a friend. If a person is selling pits that he calls "Championship Bloodlines" as you see it in the paper that are NOT AKC registered, you can take a wild guess at what that championship bloodline title comes from.

My pit is a rescued pit. She was found chained to a stump with no food or water. She was also out in the heat. Did she try to attack or bite me? NOPE! Does she try today? NOPE! Why do you think the owner had her chained up with no food or water? Possibly making her mean or to fight? You bet!!

OtherHD - wow, with all due respect, getting our Golden when my kids were 12 and 9, was the best thing we ever did! She's 80 lbs., big but thinks she's a lapdog. Hubby calls her half dog/half cat. In other words, very, very sweet and loving.

One more thing, I don't have stats to back this up at all. But growing up we had Cairn Terriers. My mom's from Scotland. Well, they were nice to us and loving but didn't care for company. They barked sometimes, drove my dad nuts. We of course loved them, had 3 by the time I was an adult. One we had before I was born. Well, I preferred little dogs too and big dogs made a little uncomfortable. Now I've discovered, the bigger the dog, the more calm they are, sometimes. My 80 lb dog thinks she's still a puppy and can fit in my lap. I now prefer big dogs over small dogs. That Jack Russel I mentioned in an earlier post is the meanest dog on my street. No one likes that little dog. Give me a big one anyday over a little one. Now I know so many little dogs are sweet, poodle's, etc. So it does depend on the owner, blood lines and then the breed too.

they cant be predicted. its in their breeding. they are like a ticking time bomb. while most will never go off, some will, and the results could be tragic.

Seriously now Helen, ANY DOG, *repeat* ANY DOG can be vicious and take a guess as to what breed is responsible for the MOST attacks and bites??? Anyone? Helen? Come on, I KNOW you can do it! It's the most sought after breed, considered to be the MOST lovable, most adorable, BEST family dog, best hunting/water dog.......anyone? Do some research Helen and I'll get back to you.

Hmmm.....still no answer I see, O'TAY, here's a *hint*.....they come in Yellow, Chocolate and Black. According to the latest stats as per NASAR (National Association of Search and Rescue), this particular breed of dog is responsible for over "95%" of dog bites, most requiring ER visits, NOW.....any ideas?
