SCHOOL CLOSED DUE TO DANGEROUS COLD
need someones opinion, 6+ of snow in the ground and with EXTREME cold and windchills between -20 and -30 would a school close for this reason. My school was closed today and i am expecting the same tomorrow. It is going to be wickedly cold and the powdery snow will be in drifts, the snow that was shoveled will be blown all over the place. I just think that they will close it, and it's the friday before mondays holiday. I think this will all play into consideration and will favor no schools.

I know that some schools will delay their start because of the cold. I don't think they will close.

Over 100 communities have already canceled school in Massachusett's and Southern New Hamphsire tomorrow (Friday) due to the expected severe wind chills.

Really...thats very interesting. I honestly never really heard of any schools closing here in upstate NY due to cold weather...but maybe this really is colder than anything we've had in a long time.

My wife's kid sister drives a school bus outside of BGM. She said virtually all schools in the area are 2 hrs delayed for Fri AM and that may change to closed Fri due to cold.

i think it would be irresponsible and insane to send kids out to the bus stops in wind chills of -25 to -30F that is DANGEROUS COLD. this is where parents should have the sense to keep their kids home anyway in the case that the districts themselvs are not sensible enough to realize the danger on their own. brushing this off as not potentially dangerous or life threatening is rediculous.
wind chill warnings and advisories are NOT issued just for the hell of it or to keep the forecasters busy during their shifts. nor is any other watch warning or advisory. they are issued to make the public understand that the combination of brutally cold temperatures and strong winds will contribute to dangerously cold wind chills.
frostbite can occur in as little as 5-10min in such severe wind chills.

my school has a 90 minute delay, 90 MINUTES!!!!!!!!! do you believe this, schools to my south are clsoed and they got less snow than I did, this is titally stupid. It's a friday and mondays a holiday, there is 6 inches of powdery snow on the ground that will be blown arround by the wind, and the windchill is going to be -20 all day. I don't know what my school is thinking. Right now in the temp at my school is 3 with a windchill of -18,

One thing most of (Including me) have missed:
Most school buses run on Diesel fuel and most buses are kept outside. IF the buses are left outside in the cold, Diesel fuel will turn to jelly in the gas tank and it takes hours for it to recover. NOw combind that with the kids out in the cold, you have a good reason to close.
A school may choose to delay in the hopes that the bussing company will beable to get the busses on the road.
